College basketball roundup: Clarion deals Vulcans first PSAC loss
Justice Easter scored 21 points and Clarion made 12 three-point field goals as the Golden Eagles defeated California 81-75 Wednesday night, handing the Vulcans their first loss in PSAC play.
Clarion (4-5, 9-8) went 12-for-28 from behind the three-point line. None of its long-range baskets was bigger than a three from deep in the corner by Peters Township graduate Gavin Conte that gave Clarion a 76-70 lead with 1:36 remaining. Cote finished with 13 points.
Antoine Arnett led Cal (8-1, 11-5) with 25 points. Jordyn Buchanan had 21 points and eight rebounds, and Dalman Alexander scored 15.
Washington & Jefferson 93, Waynesburg 63
Alex Acosta and Nathan Plotner each scored 15 points as Washington & Jefferson rolled to a 93-63 victory over Waynesburg in a Presidents’ Athletic Conference men’s basketball game Wednesday evening.
W&J (4-1, 11-3) took control early, shooting a blistering 60 percent in the first half and forging a commanding 48-31 advantage at halftime.
Matt Seidl scored 10 of his 14 points in the first half for W&J. Michael Plasko netted nine of his 11 in the opening 20 minutes.
The Presidents shot 54 percent for the game.
Scott Bilovus led Waynesburg (1-4, 5-9) with 13 points.
W&J used 17 players in the game with 11 of them entering the scoring column.
Waynesburg played 20 with 14 different players scoring.
Women’s results
California 86, Clarion 57
Kennedy Bankett had a double-double of 26 points and 10 rebounds as California snapped a three-game losing streak by crushing host Clarion, 86-57, in the PSAC.
Macy Sardone scored 17 points for the Vulcans (5-4, 9-10). Jalasia Hull came off the bench to score 12, and Hope Hawkins and Alicia Young each had 10. Kimaya Williams was a force inside as she grabbed 20 rebounds and dished out 13 assists.
Clarion (4-5, 9-6) was outrebounded 59-27.
Washington & Jefferson 73, Waynesburg 44
Washington & Jefferson held host Waynesburg without a field goal for the game’s opening 12 minutes and the Presidents cruised to a 73-44 victory in a PAC game.
W&J (5-0, 10-4) led 21-2 at the end of the first quarter and it was 26-2 when Waynesburg (2-3, 6-8) made its first basket. The Yellow Jackets missed all 14 of their shots in the opening quarter and shot only 24 percent for the game.
Stellanie Loutsion led W&J in scoring with 18 points. Riley DeRubbo followed with 16 points, and Katie Kovalchick and Michaell Jellison had 10 each.
Kara McFadden had 10 points for Waynesburg, which trailed 40-14 at halftime.
