College basketball: Balanced scoring sparks Saint Vincent past W&J

Jaden Gales led five Saint Vincent players in double figures with 16 points and the Bearcats used a second-half run to pull away for a 79-68 win over Washington & Jefferson on Wednesday night in a Presidents’ Athletic Conference men’s basketball game at Salvitti Family Gymnasium.
Saint Vincent (4-3, 9-7) trailed 34-31 at halftime but used an 11-0 run over a three-minute stretch midway through the second half to turn a 47-46 lead into a 58-46 advantage.
W&J, which began the night tied with Chatham for first place in the PAC’s South Division, shot only 39 percent and committed an uncharacteristic 21 turnovers.
Dev Ostrowski scored 15 points for Saint Vincent, Terek Crosby had 14, Jevontae Jones 13 and Jaden Payne 12.
W&J was led in scoring by Matthew Carte’s 16 points, 11 coming in the first half. Nathan Plotner had 15 points, Michael Plasko netted 13 and Matt Seidl had 10.
Bethany 85, Waynesburg 77 Bethany beat Waynesburg from a distance.
Co Rose scored a game-high 29 points and made seven of Bethany’s 16 three-point field goals as the Bison defeated Waynesburg 85-77 in a PAC game.
The win moved Bethany (3-4, 7-9) ahead of Waynesburg (2-5, 6-10) in the South Division standings.
Bethany, which never trailed in the game, made nine three-pointers in the first half but led by only 38-34 at halftime. The Bison pulled away in the second half and led by as many as 21 points with six minutes remaining. Bethany was 16-for-36 from three-point range.
Waynesburg had a strong finish and closed to within 12 points with 2:25 left and pulled to within single digits with a basket at the buzzer.
Jayden Jackson scored 18 points and grabbed 13 rebounds for Bethany, Ryan Reasbeck had 14 points and Troy Hixon 11.
Waynesburg, which made 21 of 23 free throws, was led in scoring by Aiden Blake’s 23 points. Jackson Rhodes chipped in with 19 points and Casey Keesee had 15.
Women’s results
Saint Vincent 72, Wash & Jeff 59
Makenna Maier scored 15 points, Camden Bashor added 14 points and Saint Vincent took sole possession of first place in the PAC’s South Division with a 72-59 victory at Washington & Jefferson.
Saint Vincent moves to 7-0 in the conference and 12-4 overall. W&J slips to 6-1, 11-5.
The Bearcats used a 19-4 run during the third quarter to turn a 32-31 deficit into a 50-36 lead. Saint Vincent shot 52 percent for the game and made 11 of 14 shots in the pivotal third quarter. W&J was held to 32 percent shooting.
Katie Kovalchick led W&J with 16 points and eight rebounds. Riley DeRubbo had 13 points and Stellanie Loutsion 10.
Bethany 82, Waynesburg 71
Ella Simpson led five Bethany players in double figures with 18 points and the Bison won 82-71 at Waynesburg in a PAC game.
Bethany (5-2, 10-6) took control early, building leads of 29-21 after one quarter and 48-34 at halftime.
Waynesburg (2-5, 6-10) received 22 points and four steals from Kalista Friday, Mia Henkins had 16 points. The Yellow Jackets made 10 three-pointers, including four by Friday.
