College basketball: Behind Lucas’ 27, Cal rallies for win at IUP

Bryson Lucas scored 27 points and grabbed nine rebounds, sparking California to a big second-half comeback that resulted in an 84-77 win at Indiana in a pivotal PSAC West men’s basketball game Wednesday night.

Cal (11-1, 14-5) began the night tied for first place in the West with Gannon. The Vulcans fell behind 42-29 at halftime but Cal rallied in the second half behind Lucas. The Vulcans scored 55 second-half points as they shot 66 percent from the field and made seven three-pointers over the final 20 minutes.

Antoine Arnett scored 18 points to help Cal. Keondre DeShields came off the bench to score 14 and Brayden Reynolds had 11.

Christian Moore scored a game-high 29 points for IUP (8-3, 13-4).

Chatham 84, Wash & Jeff 72

Drew Vizenor scored a game-high 27 points, sparking Chatham’s second-half comeback as the Cougars defeated Washington & Jefferson 84-72 in a key Presidents’ Athletic Conference game.

Chatham improved to 8-1 in the PAC’s South Division and 13-4 overall. W&J slipped to 6-3, 13-5.

The Presidents led 37-34 at halftime, but Chatham scored 50 points in the second half. The Cougars made 11 three-pointers in the game.

W&J was led in scoring by Michael Plasko’s 17 points, 13 of which came in the first half. Matt Seidl tossed in 16 points, and Alex Acosta and Quinton Burlenski each tallied 12.

Chatham led 68-66 before embarking on an 8-1 run that gave the Cougars a 76-67 lead with only two minutes remaining.

Franciscan 87, Waynesburg 57

Franciscan scored 50 points in the first half and cruised to a 87-57 win over visiting Waynesburg in a PAC contest.

Sawyer Butler scored 19 points to lead Franciscan (6-3, 14-4).

Casey Keesee netted 17 points and Jackson Rhodes had 11 for Waynesburg (2-7, 6-12), which shot only 33 percent and committed 20 turnovers.

Women’s results

Wash & Jeff 64, Chatham 52

Riley DeRubbo scored 17 points, leading three Washington & Jefferson players in double figures as the Presidents won at Chatham 64-52 in a Presidents’ Athletic Conference game.

The win keeps W&J (8-1, 13-5) in the thick of the battle for the PAC’s South Division title. The Presidents moved into a tie for first place as Bethany upset Saint Vincent, 64-57. Chatham (5-4, 12-5) had its three-game winning streak snapped.

W&J’s Katie Kovalchick scored 14 points and narrowly missed a double-double as she grabbed nine rebounds. Stellanie Loutsion chipped in with 12 points.

The Presidents led almost the entire game. They were up 19-15 after one quarter and moved out to a 37-26 lead at halftime. A big third quarter boosted the W&J lead to 54-36. Chatham was able to close to within single digits in the fourth quarter but the Presidents pulled away down the stretch.

Madison Nereu led Chatham with 15 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.

Waynesburg 71, Franciscan 60

Kalista Friday scored 18 points, including her 1,000th career point, Mia Henkins added 17 and Waynesburg won its second straight, 69-60 at Franciscan in a PAC game.

The win moves Waynesburg closer to the .500 mark, both in the conference and overall, at 4-5 and 8-10.

Waynesburg led 31-24 at halftime and used a 22-11 scoring margin in the third quarter to pull away.

Henkins made five of the Yellow Jackets’ nine three-point field goals. Kara McFadden chipped in with 15 points and seven rebounds.

Franciscan (0-9, 3-15) was led by Jayden Melnyk’s 18 points.

Indiana 97, California 66

Tenth-ranked Indiana bounced back from its first loss of the season with an impressive 97-66 thumping of California in a PSAC West game.

Teresa Maggio led four Crimson Hawks in double figures with 19 points. IUP is 11-1 in the PSAC and 17-1 overall.

The Crimson Hawks shot a blistering 65 percent and forced Cal into 25 turnovers. IUP led by 25-15 after one quarter and the difference was still 10 at halftime. IUP, however, outscored Cal 48-27 in the second half.

Trinity Balog led the Vulcans with a game-high 21 points and Kennedy Bankett had 15.

West Virginia 59, Kansas State 54: Honor Huff scored 17 points and Treysen Eaglestaff scored 12 points and grabbed nine rebounds and West Virginia beat Kansas State 59-54 late Tuesday night.

Brenen Lorient scored 10 points for West Virginia (5-3 Big 12, 14-7), which has won three of four and six of its last nine games. It was the third fewest points scored this season for Kansas State.

P.J. Haggerty scored 16 points, David Castillo scored 15 points and Nate Johnson 13 for Kansas State (1-7, 10-11). The Wildcats have lost seven of their last eight.

West Virginia led 57-54 with 22 seconds left before the Jayhawks intentionally fouled Huff. He missed the front end of a one-and-one and Kansas State took possession.

Lorient blocked Haggerty’s layup attempt with 14 seconds left. Kansas State maintained possession but Haggerty’s 3-point attempt with 10 seconds left was off the mark.

Taj Manning fouled Huff and he made both foul shots with eight seconds left to seal the win.
