Chesick hired as PSAC’s new commissioner
The final day of June was Tuesday, and the first day in 33 years that Steve Murray didn’t have to worry about anything involving the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference.
Murray retired Tuesday as commissioner of the PSAC. It was a mostly thankless but rewarding job that he held for 29 years. Murray had been involved with the PSAC for 33 years, the first three as the league’s full-time sports information director, then one year as assistant commissioner.
The PSAC didn’t have to look far to find Murray’s successor.
The conference announced Tuesday that Carlin Chesick has been hired as its commissioner. Chesick is the fourth commissioner in the growing conference’s history and the first woman to hold the position.
Chesick is a longtime senior staff member in the PSAC office. She recently completed her 21st year with the PSAC and has been senior associate commissioner since 2021.
“I am deeply honored by the Board of Director’s confidence and grateful for the opportunity to serve as the next commissioner of the PSAC,” Chesick said in a release. “Our conference has a proud history and a strong foundation, and I look forward to working collaboratively with the Board, our athletic administrators and campus leaders to elevate the student-athlete experience. I also want to thank commissioner Steve Murray for his dedicated service to the PSAC and for helping establish the PSAC as one of the premier Division II conferences in the nation.”
A native of Bloomington, Ill., Chesick graduated from St. Francis (Pa.) University with a degree in Information Systems Management and received her master’s degree in Sport Administration from Pennsylvania West California. At St. Francis, Chesick was one of the top women’s basketball players in school history during the school’s Division I era.
“Carlin Chesick is exceptionally prepared to lead the PSAC into its next chapter,” Charles Patterson, president of Shippensburg University and chairman of the PSAC Board of Directors, said. “Her deep knowledge of the conference, extensive NCAA experience and longstanding commitment to student-athlete success give her the credibility and perspective needed for this moment. She is a thoughtful, collaborative and strategic leader, and I am confident she will strengthen the PSAC while honoring that proud foundation as we embark on our next chapter.”
