W&J’s run ends with loss to Christopher Newport

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Washington & Jefferson College men’s basketball team had its season come to an end Saturday with a 90-61 loss to host Christopher Newport in the second round of the NCAA Division III tournament.

The Presidents, who had their first NCAA tournament victory in 32 years in Friday’s first round against Mount Union, finish with a 23-7 record. The 23 wins are the second most in a season in program history. W&J has won 20 or more games six times in school history with four of those coming under current head coach Ethan Stewart-Smith.

Christopher Newport improves to 23-5 and advances into next weekend’s Sweet 16.

Senior Matt Seidl led the Presidents with 18 points and six rebounds. Seidl finishes his W&J career with 1,402 points, which is tied for 10th on the Presidents’ all-time scoring list.

Alex Acosta added eight points and finishes his career with 1,106 points.

Christopher Newport forged an early 14-6 lead but W&J used a pair of three-pointers by Seidl to close to within 14-12.

Christopher Newport led 29-28 when the Captains embarked on a 14-4 run to close the first half and take a 43-32 lead into the intermission. W&J was held to one field goal in the final four minutes of the half.

Christopher Newport extended its lead in the second half, putting together a decisive 17-3 run that included 12 consecutive points and increased the gap to 60-35 with 12:54 remaining.

The Captains shot 48.7 percent and made 9 of 22 three-point shots. Christopher Newport also outrebounded W&J, 53-29. W&J shot 36.4 percent.

Seidl and Acosta were part of a senior class that compiled a 73-37 record over the past four seasons. W&J advanced to the PAC Tournament title game in each of the past two seasons.
