Duquesne advances in Atlantic 10 tourney
PITTSBURGH — Alex Williams helped lead Duquesne past Rhode Island on Thursday with 22 points off of the bench in a 67-61 win at the Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament at PPG Paints Arena.
Williams added eight rebounds for the Dukes (18-14). Jimmie Williams added 17 points while going 7 of 12 from the floor. Tarence Guinyard shot 4 of 11 from the field and 5 for 8 from the line to finish with 15 points.
Tyler Cochran led the Rams (16-16) in scoring, finishing with 34 points and 10 rebounds.
Jimmie Williams put up 12 points in the first half for Duquesne, which led 35-28 at the break. Guinyard led Duquesne with 14 points in the second half.
Duquesne, the No. 7 seed, advances to play No. 2 Virginia Commonwealth in the quarterfinals today at 5 p.m.
VCU (24-7) is one of four teams that received a double bye into the quarterfinals.
Other winners Thursday were No. 9 George Washington and No. 13 St. Bonaventure. GW was a 66-62 winner over Fordham and St. Bonaventure upset No. 5 George Mason 63-57.
George Washington will play top-seeded St. Louis in today’s opening game at 11:30 a.m., and St. Bonaventure faces Dayton at 2 p.m. St. Joseph’s will play either Davidson or Loyola Chicago in the 7:30 p.m. finale.
