Earlier this month, while at the WPIAL Team Golf Championships, where Peters Township won its fifth consecutive Class 3A girls title, Indians coach Synclaire Stroyne said the key to PT’s success is that golf is not just a fall activity for her golfers.

“This is a year-long lifestyle of golf,” she explained.

That lifestyle has netted another state championship.

Peters Township won its third PIAA title in four years Wednesday, beating eight other finalists on Penn State’s White Course.

Peters Township, led by freshman Annie Higgins, who shot a round of 1-under par 71, had a 3-player team total of 228 to beat runner-up Conestoga by five strokes. Conestoga edged Peters Township for the state title last year.

Higgins and Conestoga’s Jill Burks tied for medalist honors at the event.

Abington Heights placed third at 248 and South Fayette, which does not have a senior in its lineup, was fourth at 251.

At the state finals, only the top three scores count for each team instead of the normal four in regular-season matches.

Higgins’ round included four birdies. She played the front nine in 36 and the back side in 35. She birdied her final hole to finish the round under par.

Indians teammate Betty Glyptis shot 4-over 76 and freshman Josie Jeglinski carded a 9-over 81.

The Indians’ throwout scores were Autumn Merck’s 86 and Olivia Ondrejko’s 93.

South Fayette was led by Emma Nickolas’ round of 80. Alianna Billings followed with an 83 and Olivia Valentino shot 88.

The WPIAL swept the girls team titles as Oakland Catholic won the Class 2A championship by nine shots over runner-up West Middlesex. LaSalle College defeated State College in a playoff to win the Class 3A boys championship. Devon Prep was the Class 2A boys winner.
