High school basketball: Colarusso drives Mikes to opening win
Dom Colarusso scored seven of his game-high 17 points in the pivotal fourth quarter as Carmichaels opened its season with a 49-41 win at rival Mapletown in non-section action Friday night.
Carmichaels held a 10-point lead after one quarter but Mapletown used a 19-8 scoring edge in the second quarter to take a 23-22 halftime lead.
The Mikes led 34-32 after three quarters and pulled away over the final eight minutes.
Liam Lohr and Ayden Adamson each flipped in 11 points for Carmichaels.
Jeremiah Mick paced Mapletown with 13 points and Braden McIntire followed with 12.
Chartiers Valley 61, Peters Township 59:
In the AHN/Highmark Classic, Chartiers Valley opened the season with a 61-59 victory over a Peters Township team that is shorthanded because of the Indians’ participation in the state football playoffs.
Jaden Davis scored a game-high 29 points for CV, which used a basket with 27 seconds to take the lead. PT missed its last shot.
Julian Semplice added 12 points for the Colts.
Jack Dunbar paced PT with 18 points and Dylan Donovan followed with 15.
Girls results
Chartiers-Houston 49, Uniontown 23:
Amelia Brose poured in a game-high 17 points and Ava Capozzoli added some torrid long-range shooting, powering Chartiers-Houston to a 49-23 season-opening win over Uniontown in the opening round of the Brownsville tournament.
The Bucs took control early, forging leads of 13-3 at the end of one quarter and 32-8 at halftime.
Capozzoli tossed in four three-point field goals and finished with 13 points.
Geeleece Ingram led Uniontown with 12 points.
Fort Cherry 44, Bishop Canevin 37:
Rainey Staub poured in a game-high 21 points as Fort Cherry defeated Bishop Canevin 44-37 in the first round of the Rangers’ tournament.
Canevin rallied after falling behind 25-14 at halftime. The Crusaders used a 15-6 scoring edge in the third quarter to close to within 31-29 but Fort Cherry won with a 13-8 edge over the pivotal final eight minutes.
Julianna Umalin led Canevin with 13 points and Kyla Cooley had 11.
Charleroi 54, Derry 45:
Ella Sypolt and Camryn Musser each scored 16 points, powering Charleroi to a 54-45 victory over Derry in the first round of the Monessen Tip-Off Classic.
Charleroi pulled away in the second half after building a 16-15 halftime edge. The Cougars scored 19 points in both the third and fourth quarters.
Jane Huss paced Derry with 15 points and Samantha Gruska was close behind with 14.
Jefferson-Morgan 31, Carmichaels 29:
Kayla Larkin scored 12 points and Jefferson-Morgan rallied in the final quarter to edge rival Carmichaels 31-29 in the Rockets’ tournament.
The game was close throughout and Carmichaels held a 21-19 lead after three quarters. Jefferson-Morgan won with A 12-7 scoring edge down the stretch.
Duski Staggers scored a game3-high 13 points for Carmichaels.
Monessen 41, Brashear 7:
Monessen had no trouble advancing to the championship game of its own tournament by routing overmatched Brashear, 41-7.
The Greyhounds will play Charleroi in the title game Saturday with tipoff scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
Monessen led 14-0 after one quarter and 29-0 at halftime against their opponents from the Pittsburgh City League.
Myasia Majors led Monessen in scoring with 11 points.
