High school softball: Two 3-run innings win for Belle Vernon
Belle Vernon used a pair of three-run innings to defeat visiting Ringgold 7-4 in Class 4A Section 2 Tuesday.
Bella Williams had two doubles and drove in a run to lead Belle Vernon (2-1, 7-1) at the plate. Two Leopards pitchers, Lily Crawford and Maddie Grisnik, held off late charge by Ringgold (0-1, 0-3). Crawford was the winner and Grisnik earned a save.
Lauren VanDivner doubled for Belle Vernon. Losing pitcher Danie Vecchio had a double.
West Greene 14, Jefferson-Morgan 5
West Greene opened Class A Section 2 play with a 14-5 win at Jefferson-Morgan.
Payton Gilbert was the winning pitcher, striking out seven.
Gilbert walked three times, hit a double and scored three runs as West Greene improved to 1-0, 2-2.
Emmaline Beazell went 4-for-4 with a double, and four runs, Sammi Zimmerman had a double and drove in three and Ella Scott had a big game with two doubles and five RBI.
Brooklynne Snyder went 3-for-4 with a double for J-M (0-1, 0-3). Kayla Larkin and Sayde Stickovich also doubled.
South Park 3, McGuffey 1
South Park’s Sydney Sekely struck out 17 as the Eagles defeated visiting McGuffey 3-1 in Class 3A Section 4.
Sekely allowed four hits and one walk as South Park improved to 2-0 in section and 4-1 overall. The Eagles led 1-0 before scoring twice in the fifth inning.
McGuffey (0-1, 2-3) broke up Sekely’s shutout bid in the seventh when losing pitcher Makenna Crothers singled home Julia Barr. Crothers threw a strong game, scattering five hits and striking out six.
Chartiers-Houston 19, California 0
Chartiers-Houston scored 10 runs in the top of the first inning and went on to a 19-0 three-inning thumping of California in Class A Section 2.
The Bucs (2-0, 4-1) had only six hits, including a double by Mackenzie Shumar, but took advantage of 11 walks and six hit batsmen.
