High school baseball: South Fayette wins in 11 innings
Tyler Schepis hit a tiebreaking sacrifice fly in the top of the 11th inning and South Fayette went on to a 4-1 road win over Bethel Park in Class 5A Section 2 Wednesday.
The teams split the two-game series.
Bethel Park (3-1, 4-3-1) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning and then was shut out over the next 10 by South Fayette pitchers Ethan Rose and Gino Satira. Rose allowed four hits and no walks over nine innings. Satira was the winner with two innings of relief.
The Lions improve to 1-1 in section and 2-1 overall.
Avella 7, Jefferson-Morgan 3
Avella scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to rally and beat visiting Jefferson-Morgan 7-3, keeping the Eagles undefeated.
Avella is 4-0 in Class A Section 1 and 5-0 overall. J-M slips to 0-4, 2-4.
The Eagles trailed 3-2 before tying the score in the fifth. In the sixth, Bryce Wright’s two-run single gave Avella the lead and Brian Martos followed one batter4 later with another two-run single.
Wright was the winning pitcher, scattering five hits over 6 ⅔ innings.
Joey Bair had a double for the Rockets.
Waynesburg 7, Yough 1
Winning pitcher Trenton Zupper and reliever Austin Surber combined on a one-hitter as undefeated Waynesburg bested visiting Yough, 7-1, in Class 3A Section 4.
Zupper, who pitched six innings for the win, went 3-for-3 at the plate. Surber and Tyler Groves each a double as the Raiders improved to 3-0 in section and 4-0 overall.
Waynesburg swept the two-game series with Yough (2-2, 2-5).
Canon-McMillan 15, Norwin 0
Canon-McMillan had about as fine a day on the diamond as a baseball can have. The Big Macs rolled to a 15-0 five-inning win over Norwin in Class 6A Section 2.
C-M pitchers M.J. Maruschak and Teddy Burke combined on a no-hitter. Maruschak pitched the first three innings and struck out four and Burke had one strikeout in his one inning.
Will Taczak and Nico Patragas each went 3-for-3 with a double. Taczak had four RBI. Alex Shank doubled and drove in two as the Big Macs improved to 4-2 in the se3ction and 4-4 overall.
Connellsville 4, Trinity 0
Logan Lowery threw a five-hit shutout as Connellsville blanked Trinity 4-0 in Class 5A Section 2.
Connellsville (2-2, 4-5) did all of its scoring after the third inning and Lowery kept the Hillers off the scoreboard. Trinity was held to five singles, two by Luke Lacock.
Belle Vernon 9, Uniontown 4
Adam LaCarte went 3-for-3 with two home runs and five RBI, powering Belle Vernon to a 9-4 win over visiting Uniontown and a sweep of the two-game Class 4A Section 2 series.
Belle Vernon (2-0, 5-1) used two pitchers to hold Uniontown (0-2, 1-4) to four hits.
West Greene 10, Mapletown 0
Darren Knight tossed a one-hitter as West Greene defeated visiting Mapletown 10-0 in five innings to sweep the two-game series in Class A Section 1.
Knight did not walk a batter and struck out eight. Hayden Hamilton and Kameron Tedrow each had a double for West Greene (2-2 in section).
