High school softball: C-H’s Ferri strikes out 21
Winning pitcher Meadow Ferri fired a one-hitter with all 21 out coming via strikeout as Chartiers-Houston blanked host Jefferson-Morgan 6-0 in Class A Section 2 play Monday afternoon.
Ferri, who did not walk a batter, helped her cause by going 2-for-4 and driving in three runs. Alexis Fetsko drove in two runs and scored twice.
The lone hit for J-M (1-2, 1-4) was a single by Kayla Larkin.
Chartiers-Houston is 4-0 in section, 6-1 overall and hosts Carmichaels in a key section game today.
Carmichaels 4, Mapletown 0
Bailey Barnyak pitched a one-hit shutout in Carmichaels’ 4-0 victory over Mapletown in Class A Section 1.
Barnyak had 12 strikeouts and walked two batters. She contributed offensively with a two-run triple in the first. Kaitlyn Waggett doubled and scored two runs.
Mapletown’s Alexis Perry doubled and walked.
The Mikes improved to 3-0 in section and 6-1 overall. The Maples are 1-1, 1-3.
Waynesburg 1, Seton LaSalle 0
Gina Tedrow fired a four-hit shutout and Ellie Makel hit a solo home run, giving Waynesburg a 1-0 win over Seton LaSalle in a Class 3A Section 4 game.
Makel led off the second inning with her home run to center field and that was all the offense Tedrow needed as she blanked Seton LaSalle (1-2, 2-4). Tedrow struck out 13 and did not walk a batter.
Avery Davis and Dani Stockdale both doubled for Waynesburg (1-1, 3-5).
McGuffey 10, Keystone Oaks 2
Makenna Crothers threw a four-hitter and McGuffey broke open a close game by scoring six runs in the seventh inning for a 10-2 road win over Keystone Oaks in Class 3A Section 4.
Crothers struck out eight, did not walk a batter and helped her cause by going 3-for-3 with two RBI, including one in the seventh inning. Mackenzie Shrader doubled and had three RBI for McGuffey (2-1, 5-2)Katie Grimm and Nicole Klagus also doubled for the Highlanders.
Trinity 4, Bethel Park 2
Three Trinity pitchers combined to stymie visiting Bethel Park and Ally Krenzelak smacked a bases-loaded triple, powering the Hillers to a 4-2 win in Class 5A Section 4.
Trinity (2-1, 6-2) did all of its scoring in the bottom of the first inning. Krenzelak’s triple made it 3-0 and she scored on a wild pitch.
That was enough offense for Trinity pitchers Maddie Ray, Emma Starr and Finley Hohn, who combined on a five-hitter. Hannah Suhoksi had a double for the Hillers.
Bethel Park (2-2, 4-5) scored its runs in the fifth inning.
South Fayette 4, Western Beaver 2
Emma Earley hit a tiebreaking solo home run in the sixth inning and got the final five outs of the game to earn a save as South Fayette edged Western Beaver 4-2 in Class 5A Section 3.
The Lions (3-1, 5-1) were locked in a 2- tie before Earley’s home run and tacked on an insurance run in the top of the seventh on an RBI single by winning pitcher Stephanie Binek.
Western Beaver’s Emma Bogacki had a big game, striking out 16. She also hit a two-run homer.
West Greene 15, California 1
West Greene defeated visiting California 15-1 in a five-inning Class A Section 2 game.
Winning pitcher Payton Gilbert was 3-for-3 with two triples, a walk, three runs, three RBI and two stolen bases. Emmaline Beazell had three RBI and Kendra Tharp, Sammi Zimmerman and Ella Scott each doubled for West Greene (2-1, 3-3).
Gabby Pendo doubled for California (0-5, 0-7).
Beth-Center 10, Washington 3
Beth-Center scored three insurance runs in the seventh inning en route to a 10-3 win in Class 2A Section 3 victory over Washington.
The Bulldogs (2-0, 2-0) were led by pitcher Kendall Welsh, who was 3-for-4 with two doubles. Sonya Petterson had two hits.
Welsh earned the win in relief with 11 strikeouts and two walks.
The Prexies dropped to 1-4 in section and 1-5 overall.
Charleroi 15, Fort Cherry 1
Winning pitcher Lyla Brunner twired a two-hitter and drove in four runs as Charleroi defeated Fort Cherry 15-1 in a five-inning Class 2A Section 3 game.
Charleroi (3-1, 6-1) was sparked by a pair of four-run innings and a six-run frame.
Riley Jones went 3-for-5 with a triple, three runs and three RBI, Ariahna Blose smacked two doubles and Taryn O’Neil tripled.
Pine-Richland 5, Canon-McMillan 3
Canon-McMillan had 11 hits but couldn’t push across enough runs as the Big Macs lost 5-3 at Pine-Richland in Class 6A Section 1.
Canon-Mac trailed 5-1 entering the seventh, when they got a two-run single by Skylah Steban, but they left the bases loaded.
Both teams are 3-2 in the section.
OLSH 13, Burgettstown 3
Our Lady of the Sacred Heart stayed unbeaten in Class 2A Section 3 play with a 13-3 win over visiting Burgettstown.
The Chargers (3-0, 5-2) led 3-2 before scoring four times in the fourth inning. Morgan Obrian was 3-for-5 with two doubles and five RBI to lead OLSH.
Rya Sentipla hit two doubles, and Maddy Guiddy and Layla Sherman had one each for Burgettstown (1-3, 2-6).
Connellsville 16, Peters Township 1
Connellsville scored 12 runs in the third inning and went on to a 16-1 victory over visiting Peters Township in Class 5A Section 4.
Winning pitcher Iris Burd threw a one-hitter, an RBI triple by Elena Tylka.
Burd hit two doubles and Kirra Davis drove in four for Connellsville (2-1, 6-3). PT fell to 1-2 and 4-5.
Frazier 17, Monessen 1
Claire Domonkos drove in three runs, Grace Vaughn had three hits and scored three times and undefeated Frazier rolled to a 17-1 win over Monessen in five innings in Class A Section 3.
Winning pitcher Addison Hiles struck out eight as the Commodores improved to 3-0, both in the section and overall.
Uniontown 8, Belle Vernon 6
A six-run inning keyed Uniontown’s 8-6 victory over Belle Vernon in Class 4A Section 2 play.
The Red Raiders’ Lauren White hit a grand slam. White also tripled, as Uniontown improved to 3-1 in section and 3-2 overall.
The Leopards (3-2, 8-2) scored three runs in the fifth and six innings.
Uniontown’s Ava Livingood hit a two-run homer.
Belle Vernon’s Katie Sokol and Bella Williams doubled and Sokol had two RBI.
