High school softball: Bentworth alone at the top
Bentworth took control of the race for the Class 2A Section title Friday by blanking visiting Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, 7-0.
The win moves Bentworth to 7-0 in the section and 8-2 overall. OLSH drops to 5-1, 7-3. The Chargers had their winning streak end at five games. It was Bentworth’s sixth consecutive shutout.
Winning pitcher Sydney Gonglik was terrific again as she fired a no-hitter with 17 strikeouts. The only baserunner OLSH generated came on a walk.
Bentworth wasted no time in taking control as the Bearcats hit two home runs, one each by Gonglik and Kyleigh Glaze, in a three-run first inning. Zoie McDonald had a triple for the Bearcats and Sofia Gaussa and Nora Lindley each doubled.
Beth-Center 11, Fort Cherry 1
Kendall Welsh threw a three-hitter with nine strikeouts as Beth-Center defeated visiting Fort Cherry 11-1 in six innings in Class 2A Section 3.
Allison Lynch had three singles, Kierra Lamb belted a triple, and Bella Stepp and Welsh doubled for the Bulldogs (3-2, 3-2), who scored in all but one inning.
Trinity 4, Connellsville 1
Maddie Ray allowed one unearned run over seven innings and Trinity used a pair of two-run frames to beat visiting Connellsville 4-1 in Class 5A Section 4.
The teams split the two-game series and both are 4-2 in the section.
Trinity (8-3) scored twice in the first inning on a double by Finley Hohn, then added two more runs in the fourth to go up 4-1.
Ray scattered seven hits but walked only one. She struck out four.
Thomas Jefferson 10, Peters Township 3
Thomas Jefferson scored the game’s first seven runs and went on to a 10-3 victory over Peters Township in Class 5A Section 4.
TJ improves to 4-2 in the section and 6-4 overall. The Jaguars’ Taylor Karpac hit two doubles to back the winning pitching of Aubrey Shaffer.
Skylar Lemansky had a double for PT (1-4, 4-7).
Laurel Highlands 6, Belle Vernon 2
Aubrey Spellman homered as Laurel Highlands knocked off Belle Vernon 6-2 in Class 4A Section 2.
Katie Sokol had a big game for Belle Vernon (5-3, 10-3) as she went 4-for-4 with a double.
Ringgold 6, Albert Gallatin 5
Jules Campa went 3-for-4 with a double and scored the game-winning run on a passed ball in the bottom of the seventh as Ringgold rallied for a 6-5 victory over Albert Gallatin in Class 4A Section 2.
Albert Gallatin (1-6, 1-7) did all of its scoring in the first two innings and led 5-0. Ringgold (2-5, 2-7) battled back and won the game by scoring three times in the bottom of the seventh.
Winning pitcher Dani Vecchio had three hits for the Rams and Hailey Robertson contributed a double.
Waynesburg 7, Brownsville 1
Waynesburg scored seven runs in the first two innings and went on to a 7-1 victory over Brownsville in Class 3A Section 4.
Waynesburg (3-2, 5-6) had beaten Brownsville 1-0 earlier in the week but this time the Raiders gave winning pitcher Gina Tedrow some margin for error. Dani Stockdale went 3-for-4 and scored two runs, Aidan Snider drove in a pair and Ellie Makel scored twice.
Tedrow threw a four-hitter, allowing only an unearned run. She struck out nine.
Jeannette 2-7, Monessen 1-0
Undefeated Jeannette swept a doubleheader from Monessen, 2-1 and 7-0, in Class A Section 3.
Sophomore Gace Stein was the winning pitcher in both games as Jeannette improved to 5-0 in the section and 6-0 overall. Stein allowed four hits and no walks with 22 strikeouts over the two games.
South Fayette 15, New Castle 3
South Fayette scored nine runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to finish a 15-3 win over New Castle in Class 5A Section 3.
Cam Valentino went 4-for-5 with a double, triple, three runs and four RBI for the Lions (4-2, 6-2). Julia Munkittrick contributed three hits, including a triple, and had three RBI.
Jefferson-Morgan 19, California 4
Jefferson-Morgan scored 11 runs in the sixth inning and beat California 19-4 in Class A Section 2.
