High school softball: South Fayette rallies for win
South Fayette scored two runs in the sixth inning and two more in the top of the seventh to rally and beat Moon 6-5 in Class 5A Section 3 on Wednesday.
South Fayette (5-2, 7-2) trailed 5-4 entering the seventh but tied the score on a one-out RBI single by Makenna Galish and pushed the go-ahead run across when Addie Vierra’s grounder was misplayed for an error with two outs.
South Fayette’s Maddie Cavenaugh hit a solo home run in the third inning on the 11th pitch of the at-bat. Liv Bonacci had a double.
Burgettstown 5, Beth-Center 2
Brooklyn Robinson pitched a strong game and Emma McGregor drove in two runs as Burgettstown picked up a 5-2 win at Beth-Center in a key Class 2A Section 3 game.
The win moves Burgettstown (4-4, 5-7) into fourth place in the section. The top four teams in the section will qualify for the postseason. Beth-Center (3-4, 3-4) dips to fifth place, a half-game behind the Blue Devils.
Robinson struck out seven and did not issue a walk. McGregor, Andi Midler and Madelina Guiddy had doubles for Burgettstown. Midler went 3-for-4.
Kiera Lamp had a double for the Bulldogs.
Upper St. Clair 9, Trinity 6
Upper St. Clair used a trio of three-run innings to beat visiting Trinity 9-6 in Class 5A Section 4.
The Trinity loss leaves the Hillers as part of a four-way tie for first place in the section at 5-3. Trinity is tied with Thomas Jefferson, Connellsville and Bethel Park.
USC (2-5, 4-8) led 9-2 entering the seventh inning, when Trinity scored four times and had the tying run at the plate. Finley Hohn had two doubles, scored twice and drove in a pair for the Hillers. Alexa Zawacki added three singles.
Chartiers-Houston 24, Avella 0
Meadow Ferri and Taryne Drilak combined on a three-inning no-hitter as Chartiers-Houston rolled over Avella 24-0 in Class A Section 2.
The Bucs (6-0, 8-1) scored 10 runs in the first inning and 12 more in the second. Ferri had a triple and four RBI.
Drilak pitched two innings to get the win, striking out five.
Carmichaels 18, California 2
Carmichaels scored 14 runs over the final two innings to defeat California 18-2 in five innings in Class A Section 2.
Carys McConnell went 2-for-3 with a grand slam and five RBI to lead the Mikes at the plate. McConnell’s grand slam came in a eight-run fifth inning. Ali Jacobs was 3-for-3 with a double and triple and winning pitcher Bailey Barnyak tripled and drove in three.
Barnyak struck out 10 and did not issue a walk. Losing pitcher Kera Urick had a double.
West Greene 6, Jefferson-Morgan 4
West Greene completed a season sweep of Jefferson-Morgan by edging the Rockets 6-4 in Class A Section 2.
Winning pitcher Payton Gilbert drove in a run and scored twice. Kendra Tharp had a double for the Pioneers (6-2, 7-4) and Emmaline Beazell went 3-for-4.
Kayla Larkin gave J-M (4-3, 4-5) an early lead with an RBI double. Brooklyn Snyder also had an RBI double for the Rockets.
Monessen 9, Leechburg 4
Sidney Campbell threw a six-hitter, pitching Monessen to a 9-4 win over Leechburg in Class A Section 3.
Monessen is 5-4 in section and 5-5 overall. Leechburg is 3-4, 4-5.
Hempfield 6, Canon-McMillan 1
Two Hempfield pitchers combined on a six-hitter and the Spartans defeated Canon-McMillan 6-1 in Class 6A Section 1.
Canon-McMillan (4-6, 4-6) did get another home run from Kiersten Williams but that’s all the Big Macs could push across home plate.
Hempfield is 8-1 in section and 10-1 overall.
South Park 2, Waynesburg 0
South Park scored twice in the top of the eighth inning to win a pitchers’ duel against Waynesburg, 2-0, in Class 3A Section 4.
The win keeps South Park undefeated in the section at 7-0. The Eagles are 11-1 overall.
South Park pitcher Syd Sekely fired a two-hit shutout. She struck out 19 and did not issue a walk. Both hits for Waynesburg (4-4, 6-8) were singles by Avery Davis.
South Park began the top of the eighth with each of their first two batters reaching base via error. A squeeze play scored the first run of the game and the second came home on a two-out single by Jacie Hillgsberg, the only hit of the game for the Eagles.
Waynesburg pitcher Gina Tedrow struck out 16 and walked only one batter.
Elizabeth Forward 11, Belle Vernon 1
Elizabeth Forward hit three home runs and Shelby Telegdy struck out 10 in the Warriors’ 11-1 win at Belle Vernon in Class 4A Section 2.
Elizabeth Forward’s Julia Resnik hit two solo home runs and Hannah Evans hit one out of the park with two RBI. The Warriors’ Addyson Nigut had three hits (two doubles) and an RBI.
The Leopards’ Katie Sokol hit a solo home run in the seventh and singled.
