High school baseball: Burgettstown stays hot, walks past Wash High
Carson Tkalcevic had four RBI and every player in the Burgettstown starting lineup scored at least one run as the Blue Devils rolled to a 19-9 win over visiting Washington in a Class 2A Section 1 game Tuesday.
Burgettstown (8-1, 8-3-1) leads the section with Chartiers-Houston close behind. The Blue Devils have three section games remaining, including two against Frazier.
Against Washington, Burgettstown scored 12 runs over the first two innings and took advantage of 11 walks by Prexies pitchers.
Tkalcevic had a triple, Sam Elich and James Leuice doubled and Ethan Kovatch walked three times and scored four runs.
Pitchers Brodie Kuzior and Matthew Bredel combined for 10 strikeouts.
Washington (4-6, 6-8) had nine hits, including a double and two singles by Ian Callan, who drove in a game-high five runs.
Chartiers-Houston 9, Frazier 5
Anthony Romano went 4-for-4 and scored three times, Luke Camden hit two doubles and drove in three runs and Chartiers-Houston defeated Frazier 9-5 in a Class 2A Section 1 game played at Wild Things Park.
Romano had a double among his hits and scored on a key two-run double by Camden in the fifth inning after Frazier had closed to within 7-5.
Chartiers-Houston is 8-2 in section and 8-7 overall. The Cougars have one section series remaining, against Charleroi.
Central Catholic 12, Canon-McMillan 2
Central Catholic did all of its scoring in the first three innings and defeated host Canon-McMillan 12-2 in Class 6A Section 2.
Four different players had two RBI each for Central Catholic (6-8, 9-9), which has won the first two games of the series. The Vikings led 11-1 after two innings.
Ben Peterson hit a solo home run for Canon-McMillan (7-7, 7-9).
Fort Cherry 17, Mapletown 2
Fort Cherry scored 12 runs in the second inning and defeated visiting Mapletown 17-2 in three innings in Class A Section 1.
Matt Sieg went 3-for-3 with two doubles and four RBI, Colton Temple was also 3-for-3 with a double and three RBI and Dylan Lueck drove in three.
The win makes Fort Cherry 8-2 in section and 10-2 overall. The Rangers lead the section.
California 8, Avella 3
Caden Monticelli and Kaden Weston combined on a four-hitter as California knocked off visiting Avella 8-3 in Class A Section 1.
The teams split the two-game series with California improving to 3-7 in section and 4-11 overall. Avella dropped to 8-4 in section and 9-4 overall.
Monticelli pitched into the seventh inning and Weston recorded the final out. Weston had a big game at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two doubles and a pair of RBI.
West Greene 5, Carmichaels 4
Morgan Kiger hit a three-run homer and pitched the final 2⅔ innings as West Greene defeated host Carmichaels 5-4 in Class A Section 1.
West Greene (7-3, 10-4) swept the two-game series, winning each by one run. Kiger’s blast came in the fourth inning and gave West Greene a 4-1 lead. Carmichaels (6-4, 9-4) twice pulled to within one run, the last time being at 5-4 with a run in the fifth.
Johnny Lampe went 3-for-3 for West Greene and Colin Brady had a double. Liam Lohr and Robbie Wilson-Jones doubled for Carmichaels and Dom Colarusso drove in a pair.
Ringgold 8, Albert Gallatin 6
Eddie Frizzell hit a tiebreaking RBI single in the sixth inning and Spencer Behrendt followed with a two-run hit as Ringgold rallied to beat visiting Albert Gallatin 8-6 in Class 4A Section 2.
Ringgold (5-5, 7-8), which sits in third place in the section, swept the two-game series.
The Rams gave up four runs in the top of the sixth, which tied the score at 5-5.
Evan Weakland had a triple, losing pitcher Geno Valenti doubled and Cyrus Potkul had three singles to spark the AG offense.
Southmoreland 2, Charleroi 0
Ty Keefer fired a three-hit shutout as Southmoreland blanked Charleroi 2-0 in a non-section game.
Keefer struck out 10 and walked only one. The Scotties supported their pitcher by scoring a run in the first inning and one in the fifth.
The loss spoiled a fine outing by Charleroi pitcher Jake Beveridge, who also allowed only three hits. Beveridge struck out five. Both Southmoreland runs were unearned.
Brock Henderson had two of Charleroi’s hits.
McGuffey 2, Yough 1
Ryan Keith and Noah Seibert combined on a five-hitter as McGuffey defeated Yough 2-1 in a key Class 3A Section 4 game.
Keith allowed one run over six innings and the Highlanders forged single runs in the second and fifth innings. Sam Stout’s sacririce fly in the fifth scored Mason Paitt in the fifth to break a 1-1 tie. Piatt started the inning with a single, stole second base and moved to third on a wild pitch.
McGuffey is 6-4 in the section and 6-6 overall. Yough slips to 5-4, 6-8.
South Fayette 7, Upper St. Clair 5
South Fayette scored six runs in the top of the seventh inning to win 7-5 at Upper St. Clair in Class 5A Section 2. The win moves the Lions (6-4, 7-5) into second place in the section.
The key hit in the seventh was a three-run double by Gino Satira.
