High school basketball: Chartiers-Houston girls win with defense
Chartiers-Houston had seven players score, led by Ava Capozzoli’s nine points, and used its defense to defeat visiting Brentwood, 40-19, in a non-section girls basketball game Wednesday night.
Chartiers-Houston (2-0) forged a 16-4 lead after one quarter but Brentwood (0-1) closed to within 20-16 at halftime. The Bucs turned up the defense in the second half, shutting out the Spartans in the third quarter and giving up only three points over the final 16 minutes.
Ay’marie Henry led Brentwood with eight points.
Avella 56, Carmichaels 25
Ava Frank scored 17 points to lead three players in double figures for Avella (2-1) in a nonsection victory over Carmichaels (0-3).
Sydney Strope added 13 points for the Eagles and Haleigh Rush scored 10. Joceyln Carter led the Mikes with seven points.
Ellwood City 61, Washington 36
Delaney Sturgeon had a game-high 20 points for Ellwood City (1-1) in a nonsection victory over Washington (1-1). Kayla Jones and Caitlin Kreitzer scored 17 apiece for the Wolverines.
Mapletown 37, Jefferson-Morgan 25
Nicole Barrera and Makenna Lotspeich scored 12 points apiece to lead Mapletown (2-2) past Jefferson-Morgan (0-3) in nonsection play. Leighana Gooden had eight points for the Rockets.
South Fayette 51, Pine-Richland 22
Juliette Leroux scored 17 points to help South Fayette (3-0) secure a nonsection win over Pine-Richland (0-1). Ryan Oldaker finished with 12 points for the Lions and Lailah Wright scored 10. Cate Gentile led the Rams with 10 points.
Waynesburg 62, Frazier 52
Peyton Cowell poured in 21 points to pace Waynesburg (1-1) in a nonsection win over Frazier (0-2). Avery Davis added 14 points for the Raiders, who used a 19-5 advantage in the third quarter to pull away. Allie Yauch scored 16 for the Commodores.

South Side 68, Beth-Center 62
Andrew Corfield scored 32 points to help South Side defeat visiting Beth-Center 68-62 in a non-section game Tuesday.
Beth-Center fell behind 27-14 in the first quarter but fought back to within 49-41 by the end of the third quarter and outscored South Side 21-19 in the fourth as its comeback fell short.
Parker Amos topped B-C (1-1) in scoring with 21 points and Jason Zellie contributed 17 points with a trio of 3-pointers. Brayden Hull added 10 points.
Raymond Fischer had 11 points for South Side.
