High school basketball: Davis’ free throws give Belle Vernon win at Uniontown
Tommy Davis sank a pair of go-ahead free throws with 10.8 seconds as Belle Vernon edged Uniontown in a nonsection game Friday night on the Red Raiders’ home court.
Uniontown’s Calvin Winfrey’s desperation 3-point attempt missed at the buzzer.
Davis had a double-double with 13 points and 17 rebounds. Zion Moore also had a double-double for the Leopards (2-2) with a game-high 23 points and a dozen rebounds.
Kelan Milson paced Uniontown (1-1) with 17 points. Isaac Ellsworht scored 16 and Winfrey had 10.
McGuffey 51, West Greene 33
Ayden Cunningham had 26 points to propel McGuffey (3-0) to a nonsection road win over West Greene (1-1). Jacob Ealy added 11 points for the Highlanders. Darren Knight scored 12 for the Pioneers.
South Fayette 60, Canon-McMillan 40
Gavin Orosz had 17 points and Stefano Vezio scored 14 to help South Fayette (1-0) secure a nonsection road victory. Michael Detrich scored 14 for the Big Macs (0-3).
Washington 60, Waynesburg 45
Tristan Reed had 23 points to lift Washington (2-1) past Waynesburg (1-2) in nonsection action. Tayvonne France scored 14 for the Prexies and Will Callon added 13 points. Cole Headlee finished with 13 points for Waynesburg and Alex VanSickle scored 11.
Union 51, Jefferson-Morgan 43
Lucas Stanley scored 22 points and Union limited Jefferson-Morgan to 14 points in the second half as the Scotties held on for a 51-43 victory in the Fort Cherry Tournament.
Maddox Thompson chipped in with 12 points for Union (3-0).
John Woodward’s 13 points paced J-M (1-1), which trailed 32-29 at halftime. Dayten Marion added 12.
Beth-Center 45, Frazier 37
Parker Amos scored 14 points, Jason Zellie had 10 and Beth-Center won on the road, beating Frazier, 45-37.
The Bulldogs (2-1) led 23-15 at halftime and 33-24 after three quarters.
Frazier falls to 1-3.
Avella 66, Mapletown 43
Bryce Wright and Brayden Fuller combined for 34 points and Avella rode a big first half to a 66-43 road win over Mapletown.
Avella (2-2) forged a 39-16 halftime lead. The teams played to a 27-27 standoff in the second half.
Wright led the Eagles with 18 points and Fuller followed with 16. Cody Day had 12.
Ty Howard had a team-high 13 points for Mapletown.
Bentworth 52, Carmichaels 30
Bentworth held Carmichaels to single-digits in all four quarters in a nonsection road win. Ben Hays scored 21 for the Bearcats (2-1). Robbie Wilson had 12 points for Carmichaels (0-2).
Monessen 65, Fort Cherry 50
Davontae Robinson had 27 points and Ty’Vaughn Kershaw scored 11 to boost Monessen (1-0) in a victory over tournament host Fort Cherry (0-1).
Shane Cornali led the Rangers with 14 points. Tyler Wolfe contributed 11 points and Jack Kitzmiller scored 10.
Girls results
Chartiers-Houston 51, Uniontown 28
It took some time, but once Chartiers-Houston got rolling the Bucs were dominant.
Ali Wingard scored 18 points and Chartiers-Houston rode a huge fourth quarter to a 51-28 victory over Uniontown in the opening round of the Falcon Fest at Brownsville.
C-H (3-0) led 18-17 at halftime and 29-26 after three quarters. The Bucs then outscored Uniontown 22-2 in the pivotal fourth quarter.
Ava Kolovich scored 12 points for C-H, which will play Brownsville in the championship game Saturday at 5 p.m.
Uniontown (0-2) was led in scoring by Emily Myers’ nine points.
Peters Township 63, Upper St. Clair 44
Natalize Wetzel led a balanced attack with 20 points and Peters Township defeated Upper St. Clair 63-44 in the Baldwin/Peters Township Tournament at AHN Arena.
PT improves to 2-0 and will play Pine-Richland at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, also on the Indians’ home court.
Bri Morreale scored 18 points and Taylor McCullough had 13 for the Indians.
USC’s record falls to 1-1.
Avella 64, Jefferson-Morgan 45
Ava Frank put in a game-high 26 points and Sydney Strope scored 21 to lead Avella (3-1) to a nonsection road victory at Jefferson-Morgan (0-4). Strope connected on four 3-pointers. Leighana Gooden and Ava Wood scored 11 points apiece for the Rockets.
Derry 33, Charleroi 30
Jane Huss had 17 points to lead Derry (1-1) to a victory over Charleroi (0-4) at the Monessen Tournament. Anna Kondratowicz had a team-best eight points for the Cougars. Eden Smith and Jacie Lipari scored seven apiece.
West Greene 45, McGuffey 39
Kendra Tharp scored 16 points to help West Greene (4-0) top McGuffey (3-1) in a battle of previously unbeaten teams. Madelyn Roberts added 12 points for the Pioneers. All four of West Greene’s wins have come against opponents from a higher classification. Taylor Schumacher had a game-high 19 points for the Highlanders.
Brownsville 60, Bentworth 23
Skylar Gates poured in a game-high 25 points, powering Brownsville to a 60-23 victory over Bentworth in the first round of the Falcons’ tournament.
Brownsville (1-0) will play Chartiers-Houston in the championship game and Bentworth (1-1) will face Uniontown in the consolation contest.
Ava Clark also had a big night for the Falcons, scoring 21 points. Zachariah Reed added 10.
Aubrie Logan was tops in scoring for the Bearcats with 10 points.
