High school basketball: Overtime pays again for Trinity; Moore scores 40 in Leps’ win
If you’re going to attend a Trinity boys basketball game, then plan on staying a little longer than normal.
For the third time in five games, the Hillers played an overtime game Friday night in the Class 5A Section 3 opener at Bethel Park. And for the third time, Trinity won in overtime.
Jacob Dunkle had a double-double and scored four of Trinity’s 10 points in the extra session as the Hillers defeated Bethel Park, 61-57.
Trinity (1-0, 4-1) trailed 22-15 after one quarter but closed to within 28-24 at halftime. Bethel Park (0-1, 1-4) maintained a four-point advantage entering the fourth quarter but Trinity held a 16-12 scoring edge in the period to end regulation tied at 51-51.
Dunkle, who scored 22 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, and Jonah Williamson each scored four in the overtime. Williamson finished the night with 15 points.
Cam Smearman, with 16 points, was the only Bethel park player in double figures.
Belle Vernon 92, West Mifflin 82
In what will likely be one of the highest-scoring high school basketball games this season, Zion Moore had 40 points to lift Belle Vernon (1-0, 4-2) past West Mifflin (0-1, 0-7) in a wild Class 4A, Section 3 game.
Moore sank a half-dozen 3-pointers. Curtis Wade added 14 points for the Leopards and Tommy Davis scored 13.
Daven Reynolds paced the Titans with 34 points, while Jose Perez scored 24.
Jefferson-Morgan 66, Burgettstown 44
Jefferson-Morgan forged a double-digit lead in the first half and went onto a 66-44 win over visiting Burgettstown in a Class 2A Section 3 contest.
Houston Guesman led Jefferson-Morgan (1-0, 3-2) in scoring with 19 points and Jase Bedillion followed with 16.
Colton County was tops for Burgettstown (0-1, 1-3) with 15 points and Parker Rommes contributed 11.
Monessen 61, Charleroi 38
Torrence Taylor scored 17 points and host Monessen held cold-shooting Charleroi to seven first-half points en route to a 61-38 nonsection win.
Monessen led 12-5 after one quarter and 19-7 at halftime. The scoring picked up in the second half as the Greyhounds (2-1) scored 42 points. Rodney Johnson finished with 14 points for Monessen.
Brock Henderson scored a game-high 20 points for Charleroi (3-3).
Beth-Center 55, Mapletown 19
Beth-Center held host Mapletown scoreless for more than eight minutes to start the game and cruised to a 55-19 win in Class 2A Section 3.
Beth-Center (1-0, 3-2) led 19-0 after one quarter and 31-6 at halftime. Jason Zellie led the Bulldogs with 15 points.
Mapletown is 0-1, 0-4.
Jeannette 76, California 43
Jace Powell had a game-high 22 points to lift Jeannette (1-0, 4-0) to a Class 2A, Section 1 win over California (0-1, 1-3).
Noah Sunder added 12 points for the Jayhawks and Stone Markham scored 11.
Vinny Manzella led California with 15 points and Jacob Ziolecki finished with 14 points.
Peters Township 62, Thomas Jefferson 42
Dylan Donovan had 20 points to pace Peters Township (5-0, 1-0) in a Class 5A, Section 3 road win at Thomas Jefferson (3-3, 0-1).
The Indians put the game away by outscoring the Jaguars, 21-10, in the fourth quarter.
Jayden Greco added 10 points for Peters Township. Brady Kraus led the Jaguars with 13 points and Zack Dorko scored 11.
South Allegheny 74, Washington 35
Drew Cook had 22 points and Cam Epps scored 21 for South Allegheny (5-1) in a nonsection game at Washington (2-3). Josh Jackowski finished with 13 points for the Gladiators.
Girls results
McGuffey 57, Southmoreland 24
Taylor Schumacher scored 25 points and Lexi Ewin was one assist shy of a triple-double as McGuffey defeated host Southmoreland 57-24 in a nonsection game.
McGuffey was in control from the outset as the Highlanders (4-1) led 25-2 after one quarter.
Ewing finished with 11 points, 11 steals and nine assists.
Southmoreland is 2-5.
Carrick 40, Bentworth 27
Carrick built a 10-point lead in the first quarter and went on to a 40-27 win over Bentworth in a nonsection game. Aubrie Logan scored 13 points for Bentworth (2-3).
