High school basketball: Baldwin deals PT boys first loss

In a battle of two teams that figure to be WPIAL Class 5A contenders, Baldwin went on the road and knocked Peters Township from the ranks of the unbeaten, edging the Indians 56-49 Tuesday night in Section 3.

Nate Wesling scored a game-high 22 points to help Baldwin (1-0, 6-0) slip past Peters Township (1-1, 5-1) in Class 5A, Section 3 action.

Dylan Donovan had 22 points for the Indians.

Caden Cherico, Max Marzina and Matt Schenk scored 10 apiece for the Highlanders.

Chartiers-Houston 65, Carmichaels 30

Justus Buckingham had 16 points to pace Chartiers-Houston in a Class 2A, Section 3 win over Carmichaels (0-2, 0-5). The Bucs (2-0, 5-1) led 27-10 at halftime and held the Mikes off the scoreboard in the second quarter.

Nate Gregory had 12 points for the Bucs.

Alex Toth scored 11 for the Mikes.

Jeannette 70, Bentworth 42

Kymore Brown finished with 17 points for Jeannette (2-0, 5-0) in a Class 2A, Section 1 win at Bentworth.

Makus McGowen scored 13 for the Jayhawks and Jayce Powell added 10 points.

Chris Harper paced Bentworth (0-2, 2-4) with 17 points and Ben Hays scored 14.

Jefferson Morgan 61, Beth-Center 55

Jase Bedilion had 17 points to help Jefferson-Morgan earn a Class 2A, Section 3 road win at Beth-Center.

Houston Guesman finished with 13 points for the Rockets (2-0, 4-2).

Parker Amos had 15 points, Jazon Zellie contributed 12 points and Tyler Kurowski scored 10 for the Bulldogs (1-1, 3-3).

Springdale 81, California 45

Robby Simmen led four Springdale players in double figures with 18 points in a Class 2A, Section 1 win over California (0-2, 1-5).

Liam Dexter added 17 points, Pat Wylly finished with 16 points and Caleb Leahy scored 10 for the Dynamos (1-1, 5-1).

South Fayette 61, Bethel Park 34

Tyson Wright and Gavin Orosz each scored 21 points as South fayette remained undefeated with a 61-34 victory over visiting Bethel park in Class 5A Section 3.

The Lions (2-0-, 5-0) led 28-17 at halftime and pulled away over the final two periods.

Joe Parisi led Bethel Park (0-2, 1-5) with nine points.

Fort Cherry 67, Burgettstown 55

Fort Cherry ended a two-game losing skid with a 67-55 victory over Burgettstown in Class 2A Section 3.

The Rangers (1-1, 2-3) won by holding a 42-29 scoring edge in the middle two quarters.

Gavin Grace led three Rangers in double figures with 20 points. Ryan Huey followed with 17 and Shane Cornali had 11.

Parker Rommes paced Burgettstown (0-2, 1-4) with 18 points and Ryan Warrick had 14, including four three-point baskets.

Belle Vernon 79, Yough 37

Luca Ghilani led six Belle Vernon players in double figures with 14 points and Belle Vernon rolled over visiting Yough 79-37 in Class 4A Section 3.

Dane Daugherty and Elijah Majors each scored 12 points, and Dominic Ghilani, Cameron Jenko and Jude Minniti tallied 10 for the leopards (2-0, 5-2), who have won five straight.

West Greene 53, Mapletown 21

Matt Wassil scored 14 points, Lane Allison added 13 and West Greene held visiting Mapletown to nine points through the first three quarters en route to a 53-21 victory in Class 2A Section 3.

West Greene (2-0, 3-2) led 25-4 after one quarter, 39-9 at halftime and 48-9 after three quarters.

Lucas Stvenson scored nine points for Mapletown (0-2, 0-5).

Upper St. Clair 62, Canon-McMillan 32

Canon-McMillan went cold in the second half and lost 62-32 at home to Upper St. Clair in Class 6A Section 2.

USC (3-0, 6-1) led 31-23 at halftime and then held Canon-McMillan to nine points in the second half, including just two in the fourth quarter.

Tyler Robbins scored a game-high 24 points to lead USC.

Michael Detrich tallied 12 for the Big Macs.

Girls results

Washington 51, South Allegheny 14

Olivia Woods poured in 24 points and Washington had no trouble with visiting South Allegheny, beating the winless Gladiators 51-14 in a nonsection contest.

Wash High (3-4) led 25-5 after one quarter and rolled from there. Kyndra Wynn also scored in double figures for the Prexies with 13 points.

Canon-McMillan 58, North Hills 39

Sam Miller had 15 points to lead three Canon-McMillan players in double figures in a nonsection victory over North Hills (2-4). Madison Clair added 13 points for the Big Macs (4-3) and Lauren Borella scored 11.

Zoe Devlin had 18 points for North Hills.

Peters Township 64, Baldwin 42

Natalie Wetzel had a game-high 23 points for Peters Township (2-0, 6-0) in a Class 4A, Section 5 win over Baldwin (0-1, 3-4). The Indians got off to a fast start, building a 22-8 lead at the end of the first quarter. Julianne Ott led the Highlanders with 20 points.

Thomas Jefferson 60, Trinity 39

Maggie Spell scored 17 points to lead Thomas Jefferson to a Class 4A, Section 5 road win at Trinity (0-2, 4-2). Kaylee DeAngelo added 14 points for the Jaguars (1-1, 7-1).

Sutton Williamson scored 17 for the Hillers.

South Fayette 69, West Allegheny 48

Ryan Oldaker scored 17 points, Haylie Lamonde added 16 and South Fayette remained undefeated with a 69-48 victory over West Allegheny in a Class 5A Section 3 game Monday on the Lions’ home court.

South Fayette (2-0, 6-0) led 20-8 after one quarter and 37-23 at halftime.

Alaina Holtz topped West Allegheny (0-2, 4-2) with 18 points and Emma Ruperto had 12.

Burgettstown 63, Frazier 44

Savanna Rush’s 24 points paced Burgettstown to a 63-44 victory over visiting Frazier in a non-section game Monday.

Andi Midler (13), Paige Klodowski (12) and Skylar Pennington (12) also reached double figures for Burgettstown (2-4).

Allie Yauch tied for game-high honors with 24 points for Frazier (3-5).

Southmoreland 62, Ringgold 58

Southmoreland received 21 points from Lanie Moore and 20 from Olivia Aumer on its way to a Class 4A Section 3 win over visiting Ringgold.

Southmoreland (1-1, 3-5) took a 31-21 halftime lead and held on from there.

Alayna Macioce scored a game-high 24 points for Ringgold (0-2, 3-3) and Natalie Walsh added 12.
