High school basketball: Undefeated McGuffey boys win in Florida
Jake Ealy scored 19 points, powering undefeated McGuffey to a 46-34 victory over Munday (Texas) in a boys basketball game Thursday at the KSA Pre-Holiday Tournament in Kissimmee, Fla.
The Highlanders (6-0) trailed 21-16 at halftime but took control in the pivotal third quarter, outscoring Munday 21-11 to open a 37-32 lead. McGuffey held Munday (12-4) to two points in the fourth quarter.
McGuffey will play a WPIAL opponent this morning when they face Uniontown (6-1) at the Gaylord Palms Convention Center.
Nazareth Prep 80, Avella 42
Leon Henderson led five Nazareth Prep players in double figures with 20 points in a Class A, Section 1 win.
Will Evans and Michael Keys had 14 points apiece for the Saints (1-0, 4-2), Christian Rucker scored 13 and Khylil Johnson finished with 11 points.
Nate Cilia scored 11 for Avella (0-1, 3-3).
Chartiers-Houston 69, Waynesburg 57
Nate Gregory had a game-high 23 points to lead the Bucs (5-1) past Waynesburg (0-7) in a nonsection game.
Justus Buckingham added 16 points for the Bucs, who used a 20-15 advantage in the fourth quarter to salt the game away.
Alex Eck had a double-double with 18 points and 16 rebounds for the Raiders and Dane Woods contributed 17 points and three assists.
Girls results
Bentworth 29, Jefferson-Morgan 28
It wasn’t the highest-scoring game of the night but it sure was close.
Bentworth outscored host Jefferson-Morgan 5-0 in the pivotal fourth quarter and rallied for a 29-28 victory in Class 2A Section 3.
J-M (0-1, 0-7) trailed 18-17 at halftime but moved ahead 28-24 at the end of three quarters.
Jesse Lashey scored 10 points and Kayla O’Dell had eight for Bentworth (1-0, 3-4). The Rockets were paced by Leighana Gooden’s nine points that came on three three-point field goals.
Burgettstown 44, Northgate 11
Savanna Rush continued her strong play to open the season as she poured in 22 points and had a double-double as Burgettstown defeated host Northgate 44-11 in a Class 2A Section 2 game.
In addition to her scoring, Rush grabbed 15 rebounds as the Blue Devils won their section opener and improved to 3-4 overall.
Hope Stiteler scored 10 of Northgate’s 11 points.
Fort Cherry 66, Carlynton 18
Gianna Bianchini led four Fort Cherry players in double figures with 14 points as the Rangers defeated visiting Carlynton 66-18 in Class 2A Section 2.
Brooke Cornali tallied 11 points for Fort Cherry (1-0, 5-2), who have won three in a row. Allison Litman contributed 10 points and Bella Bianchini also had 10.
Clairton 83, West Greene 72 (OT)
Iyanna Wade went off for 56 points and Clairton (3-0, 5-2) stormed back from a 17-point halftime deficit to topple West Greene (1-2, 5-2) in overtime in Class A, Section 2 play.
The Bears outscored the Pioneers, 14-3, in overtime.
Madelyn Roberts had 42 points and connected on seven 3-pointers to lead the Pioneers and Kendra Tharp scored 20. Roberts and Tharp both hit career-high point totals.
Chartiers-Houston 48, Beth-Center 15
Ava Kolovich finished with 14 points and Ali Wingard scored 10 for Chartiers-Houston (1-0, 6-1) in a Class 2A, Section () win over Beth-Center (0-1, 4-4).
The Bucs were strong defensively, holding the Bulldogs to single-digits in each quarter.
Violet Trump scored five points for Beth-Center.
Monessen 45, Mapletown 28
Madison Johnson poured in 27 points to propel Monessen (1-2, 3-2) past Mapletown (0-3, 2-6) in Class A, Section 2. The Greyhounds outscored the Maples, 29-11 in the second half.
Emma Zalar scored eight points for Mapletown.
South Fayette 55, Montour 23
Ryan Oldaker scored a game-high 16 points and Haylie Lamonde scored 14 for South Fayette (3-0, 7-0) in a Class 5A, Section 3 victory at Montour (1-2, 4-3).
Abigail Cleary scored eight for the Spartans.
Upper St. Clair 66, Canon-McMillan 44
Upper St. Clair used a 19-6 advantage in the second quarter to take control and earn a Class 6A, Section 2 victory over Canon-McMillan.
Rylee Kalocay scored 19 points to lead the Panthers (1-0, 4-2). Ryan Pruznik added 12 points and Olivia Terlecki finished with 11 points.
Lauren Borella scored 14 for the Big Macs (0-1, 4-4).
California 51, Carmichaels 17
California held host Carmichaels to one point in both the first and third quarters and went on to a 51-17 victory in a Class 2A Section 3 game.
Leah Hartley led a balanced attack for California (1-0, 1-2) with 13 points and Madyson Morton followed with 12.
Carmichaels is 0-1, 0-7.
McGuffey 67, Charleroi 6
Taylor Schumacher had a double-double as McGuffey rolled to a 67-6 victory over visiting Charleroi in a Class 3A Section game.
Schumacher scored 25 points and grabbed 12 rebounds as the Highlanders improved to 1-1 in section and 5-2 overall. Sara Brownlee also hit double figures with 13 points.
Charleroi is 0-3 in section and 0-9 overall.
South Park 55, Belle Vernon 31
South Park dealt visiting Belle Vernon its first loss in Class 4A Section 3 play, beating the Leopards 55-31.
Mika Contakos scored 17 points to lead the first-place Eagles (3-0, 4-1). Addison Kerr followed with 12 points and Bella Stromberg had 10.
Belle Vernon (2-1, 4-4) was led by Saylor Lee’s seven points and nine rebounds.
