High school basketball: West Greene stuns C-H with Allison’s 75-footer
Jim Romanus, the veteran head coach of the West Greene boys basketball team, has been coaching for decades. He has never seen an ending quite like the one he witnessed Friday night in Rogersville.
Chartiers-Houston made a go-ahead basket against West Greene with four seconds remaining. The Pioneers, however, quickly inbounded the basketball to high-scoring Lane Allison, who let fly with a heave from the backcourt, about 75 feet from the Pioneers’ basket.
Swish!
Allison made an unbelievable three-point Hail Mary of a shot that gave West Greene a stunning 52-51 win in a key Class 2A Section 3 game.
“That was the longest shot I have ever seen,” Romanus said. “We have to get the video of that on one of those top-10 plays shows. Our guys got the ball inbounds quickly after Chartiers-Houston scored. It’s a good thing Lane got the shot off before I could call a timeout. The buzzer went off while the ball was in the air over midcourt and he swished it. Amazing.”
The basket capped a 27-point night by Allison and moved West Greene (3-0, 5-2) into first place in the section. It was the first section loss for Chartiers-Houston 92-1, 5-2).
