Daugherty scores 27 in Wash High victory

De’Ondre Daugherty scored 27 points in Washington’s 74-68 victory over Fort Cherry on Saturday in the Chuckie Mahoney Classic at Burgettstown High School.

Teammate Ruben Gordon added 15, as the Prexies (4-0, 7-5) won their seventh in a row.

Derek Errett led the Rangers (2-0, 6-4) in scoring with 23 points. Shane Cornali had 15 and Jack Kitzmiller added 10.

Washington had a 17-14 lead after the first quarter and a 35-30 halftime advantage. The Prexies took a nine-point lead into the fourth quarter. Fort Cherry had a 23-20 edge in the fourth.

West Allegheny 47, Burgettstown 33

The Blue Devils had a one-point lead after the first quarter, but the Indians took control in the second and clamped down for a victory over the hosts in the Chuckie Mahoney Classic.

West Allegheny’s Brandon Bell was the game’s leading scorer with 27 points. Bell made four 3-pointers as the Indians improved to 9-3.

Zack Shrockman led Burgettstown (10-3) in scoring with 13 points. Teammate James Leuice added 12.

Weirton (W.Va.) 82, Avella 38

The Eagles trailed by four entering the second quarter before Weirton’s defense tightened up on its way to a victory.

Westley Burchianti led Avella (6-7) in scoring with 15 points.

Weirton outscored the Eagles, 24-7, in the second quarter, 25-9, in the third and 13-6 in the fourth.

Weirton’s Gee Cross scored 27 points. Teammates Damar Mowder (11) and DeShawn Smith (10) were in double digits.

McGuffey 68, Chartiers-Houston 44

The Highlanders had a 12-point lead after the first quarter and never looked back in defeating the Bucs.

The second and fourth quarters were tied in scoring, but McGuffey had a 23-11 advantage in the third.

Knoch 66, South Fayette 62

The Lions had a six-point lead entering the fourth quarter before the Knights rallied for victory.

Michael Plasko led South Fayette in scoring with 26 points. Gavin Orosz added 16 for the Lions (5-6).

Knoch’s Jackson Bauman had a game-high 27 points. Teammate Derek Long had 20 points and Teegan Finocan was in double figures with 11.

The Knights improved to 9-2.

Girls basketball

Fort Cherry 53, Washington 32

The Rangers held down the Prexies on Saturday in the Chuckie Mahoney Classic at Burgettstown High School.

Fort Cherry’s Raney Staub led all scores with 21 points. Teammate Brooke Cornali added 10.

The Prexies (3-7) were led in scoring by Taraysia Finley, who had 11 points. Kaprice Johnson had 10.

The Rangers improved to 8-3.

West Allegheny 54, Burgettstown 39

The Blue Devils came out strong and had a six-point advantage after the first quarter, but the Indians rallied for a victory in the Chuckie Mahoney Classic.

West Allegheny’s Alaina Holtz led the game in scoring with 16 points and teammate Emma Ruperto had 10.

Paige Klodowski scored 15 points for Burgettstown (6-8). Kaitlyn Nease added 13.

Weirton (W.Va.) 52, Chartiers-Houston 49

Weirton outscored the Bucs by eight in the second half to rally for a win in the Chuckie Mahoney Classic.

Weirton’s Janai Turner had a game-high 24 points.

Ava Cappozzoli led Chartiers-Houston (7-4) in scoring with 12 points. Allison Wingard added 11. Mia Mitrik and Amelia Brose added 10 points apiece.

Our Lady of the Sacred Heart 54, Avella 16

OLSH’s Presley Holmes scored 11 points in the victory at the Chuckie Mahoney Classic.
