PIAA releases playoff brackets for baseball, softball
The PIAA released its playoff brackets for baseball and softball Friday afternoon.
Four local softball and two baseball teams will begin their quest for a state championship Monday.
The majority of the six teams have to travel, but Chartiers-Houston softball has a short trip to Peterswood Park to play District 5 runner-up Berlin Brothersvalley (16-7) in the first round of the Class A playoffs at 3 p.m. The Bucs (18-2) were awarded for winning their ninth WPIAL championship on Friday.
Carmichaels (16-2) finished third in the WPIAL and will make the trip up north to Penn State Behrend to face District 10 champion Cambridge Springs (16-2) at 3 p.m. in Class A.
West Greene (13-9) is the third team in Class A Section 2 to qualify for the state playoffs and will travel to District 6 championship Claysburg-Kimmel (22-1) at 4 p.m.
Bentworth softball was the runner-up in the WPIAL Class 2A championship game against Neshannock but the Bearcats (17-4) are in the state tournament against District 5 champion Everett (20-2) at 4:30 p.m.
Burgettstown baseball heads to DuBois to play District 9 champion Redbank Valley (14-6). The Blue Devils (13-5-1) defeated Riverbank Valley last year in the state playoffs. The first pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Stern Family Field. Burgettstown is the third-place team from the WPIAL in Class 2A.
Avella (12-6) will make its first trip to the state playoffs after finishing third in the WPIAL in Class A. The Eagles head to Slippery Rock to meet District 10 champion West Middlesex (10-11) at 4 p.m.
