High school softball: Jacobs’ homer, Barnyak’s pitching carry Carmichaels
Ali Jacobs hit a go-ahead, two-run homer in the sixth inning and Bailey Barnyak struck out 16 as Carmichaels defeated host McGuffey 4-2 in a non-section game Wednesday.
McGuffey (1-1) took a 2-0 lead in the fifth inning, getting a two-out, two-run double by Katie Grimm.
Carmichaels (1-0) scored one run in the sixth on a double by Carys McConnell and Jacobs followed with her home run that put the Mikes ahead, 3-2.
McConnell’s third hit of the game, in the top of the seventh, drove in Kaitlyn Waggett with an insurance run. McConnell had two doubles.
Barnyak allowed three hits. She did walk four.
McGuffey pitcher Makenna Crothers struck out 11 and walked two.
* West Greene won its home opener, beating Monessen 15-1 in five innings.
Winning pitcher Payton Gilbert tossed a three-hitter, striking out eight. She did not walk a batter. She also went 3-for-4 with three RBI and had four of West Greene’s 10 stolen bases.
Melissa Tharp tripled and scored three runs. Kendra Tharp added a double.
Grace Clingenpeel tripled for Monessen.
