High school softball: C-H rallies to win in extra innings
Zaylee Fonner’s double with one out one out in the top of the eighth inning scored Taryne Drilak and gave Chartiers-Houston a 5-4 come-from-behind win over South Park on Monday.
C-H (2-0) gave up four runs in the first inning but battled back with three in the sixth and one in the seventh to force extra innings.
Drilak started the eighth with a single and advanced on a bunt by Emily Swarrow, setting up Fonner’s clutch hit. Fonner went 2-for-4 with three RBI. Ella Richey also doubled for the Bucs.
Winning pitcher Meadow Ferri allowed five hits and four unearned runs. She walked four and struck out 13.
Kyle Mettrick homered for South Park (1-1).
* Charleroi scored eight runs over the final two innings to win its Class 2A Section 3 opener, 13-3, at Burgettstown.
Charleroi had 16 hits and took advantage of four Burgettstown errors. The Cougars broke the game open after leading 5-2 after five innings.
Winning pitcher Sophia Celaschi struck out 11 and did not walk a batter. Emma Stefanick led the Charleroi hitters, going 3-for-4 with three runs, five RBI, a home run and a double. Madalynn Lancy had two doubles.
Burgettstown’s Raya Sentipal went 3-for-4 with two doubles and two runs. Layla Sherman also doubled.
* Trinity won two games in Pigeon Forge, Tenn., beating Mogadore (Ohio) 5-0 and Elgin (Ohio) 11-1 in five innings.
Against Mogadore, Trinity pitcher Maddie Ray fired a four-hitter with seven strikeouts.
Hannah Suhoski’s RBI single in the first inning was the only offense the Hillers needed. Suhoski also had a double.
Against Elgin, Meredith Ashby went 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI to back the pitching of Emma Starr, who tossed four shutout innings. Suhoski added a triple.
* Gina Tedrow and Waynesburg dominated Westerville South (Ohio), 9-0, in Pigeon Forge, Tenn.
Tedrow fired a one-hitter with 18 strikeouts and only one walk. She helped her own cause by going 3-for-4 with two doubles and three RBI. Taylor Sibert drove in a pair of runs.
* South Fayette scored seven times in the first two innings and held on for a 7-5 victory over visiting Thomas Jefferson in a non-section game.
Jilian Hurbanek hit a grand slam in South Fayette’s six-run second inning that also included a two-run homer by Maddie Cavenaugh.
Winning pitcher Emma Earley struck out 10.
