High school softball: McGuffey wins in 9 innings

Julia Barr hit a tiebreaking RBI single in the top of the ninth inning and McGuffey tacked on two more runs for a 5-2 victory over host Seton LaSalle in a Class 3A Section 4 game Wednesday.

The win was the fourth in a row for McGuffey (7-2, 10-3).

Seton LaSalle (3-6, 4-8) led 2-0 before McGuffey scored twice in the fifth inning and the game remained tied until the ninth.

Winning pitcher Makenna Crothers threw a four-hitter. She struck out 12.

Kaylee Ward had a triple, and Barr and Maura Janovich contributed doubles for the Highlanders.

West Allegheny 3, South Fayette 1

West Allegheny won the outright Class 5A Section 3 title with a 3-1 victory over visiting South Fayette.

Winning pitcher Autumn Bielecki threw a five-hitter and struck out nine. The Indians are 8-1 in section and 15-2 overall.

Maddie Cavenaugh hit two doubles and Emma Smith tripled for South Fayette (7-3, 10-3). Lions pitcher Emma Earley struck out 10.

Chartiers-Houston 11, Jefferson-Morgan 0

Seven different Chartiers-Houston players drove in at least one run as the Bucs defeated visiting Jefferson-Morgan 11-0 in Class A Section 2.

The Bucs (11-0, 13-1) clinched at least a share of the section title. They can win it outright today if they win the completion of a suspended game against second-place Carmichaels. That game will resume in the top of the 14th inning.

Against J-M (6-5, 6-7), Chartiers-Houston led by only 4-0 before scoring seven times in the bottom of the fourth. Taryne Drilak hit a solo home run, Seanna Riggle added a triple, and Zaylee Fonner and Lauren Rush each had a double.

Winning pitcher Meadow Ferri struck out 10 over four innings.

Emilee Bazzoli had both of J-M’s two hits.

Carmichaels 7, Mapletown 0

Carys McConnell homered and tripled, and Bailey Barnyak pitched a one-hitter as Carmichaels defeated Mapletown 7-0 in Class A Section 2.

The Mikes (8-1, 11-2) were sparked by a five-run fourth inning.

Barnyak struck out 14 and walked only one. She also hit a double.

OLSH 15, Burgettstown 2

Our Lady of the Sacred Heart used a five-run inning and a six-run inning to defeat Burgettstown 15-2 in Class 2A Section 3.

Raya Sentipal hit a solo home run and Layla Sherman was 3-for-3 with a double for Burgettstown (4-6, 5-9).

OLSH is 9-1 in section and 11-3 overall.

Charleroi 13, Fort Cherry 0

Sofia Celaschi fired a five-inning no-hitter as Charleroi defeated visiting Fort Cherry 13-0 in Class 2A Section 3.

Celaschi struck out 10 and walked only one. She helped her cause with a double and three RBI.

Riley Jones went 2-for-2 with a double, three runs and three RBI, and Lyla Brunner doubled and drove in a pair as the Cougars improved to 7-4 in section and 10-4 overall.

Beth-Center 13, Washington 8

Kayleigh McDaniel drove in five runs and winning pitcher Chloe Byrne was 4-for-5 with three RBI, powering Beth-Center to a 13-8 win over Washington in Class 2A Section 3.

Kaitlynn Signorini doubled and Keira Lamp had three singles to back Bryne’s winning pitching as B-C improved to 4-5 in section and 5-5 overall. The Bulldogs are battling Burgettstown for the final playoff berth out of the section.

Washington’s Mackenzie Patterson went 4-for-4, Breonna Mitchell tripled, and Simone Ivery smacked a double and drove in three.

Frazier 12, Monessen 0

Addison Hiles pitched a five-inning no-hitter and Grace Vaughn went 3-for-3 with three RBI as Frazier blanked Monessen 12-0 in Class A Section 3.

Upper St. Clair 6, Peters Township 4

Upper St. Clair scored four runs in the top of the seventh inning to rally and beat Peters Township 6-4 in Class 5A Section 4.

PT (1-9, 4-12) led 3-0 after two innings and took a 3-2 lead into the pivotal seventh inning.

The Indians’ Emerson Gatten was 3-for-3 and Skylar Lemansky added a double.

West Greene 16, California 2

West Greene defeated California 16-2 in a five-inning game played at Penn West California.

Ella Scott led the West Greene (7-4, 9-6) attack with a double and four RBI. Payton Gilbert was 3-for-5 with three RBI, Marissa Tharp tripled and drove in three, and Kendra Tharp went 2-for-2 with a triple and three RBI.

Gilbert started in the circle and struck out three over two innings. Sammi Zimmerman relieved and struck out four.

Belle Vernon 13, Uniontown 2

Mailey Hayes went 4-for-4 with a home run and two RBI to spark Belle Vernon to a 13-2 win over Uniontown in five innings.

Gracie Sokol chipped in with a home run, triple and three RBI to back the winning pitching of Maddie Grisnik, who struck out seven.
