Canon-McMillan softball rallies past Baldwin

Canon-McMillan scored four runs in the sixth inning to break a tie game and held Baldwin off the scoreboard in the seventh for a 7-3 victory on Thursday in Class 6A Section 1 softball play at Canon-McMillan.

Two of the Big Macs’ runs in the sixth came on an error and Olivia Ford had a run-scoring single. Sam Merkle hit a sacrifice fly for the home team. Ford and Merkle had two hits apiece.

Brooke Bumer earned the pitching victory in relief after allowing no runs or hits in 2 2/3 innings. She struck out three and walked one.

Leah LaSalvia had an RBI single after falling behind 0-2 in the fourth inning for Canon-McMillan (6-8, 6-8). She drove in two runs.

Charleroi 16, Washington 4

Charleroi scored five runs in the first inning and never looked back in a win over Washington in Class 2A Section 3 play.

The Cougars (8-4, 11-4) added three runs in the second and eight in the third before the 10-run mercy rule took effect in the fifth.

Lyla Brunner was 2-for-3 with a home run to lead Charleroi’s offense. Riley Jones and Maddie Lancy had one double apiece for the Cougars.

Lancy, Ariahna Blouse, Avery Pendo and Sofia Celaschi went 2-for-3.

Blouse had six strikeouts and walked one in earning the pitching victory.

Zkyiah Hines hit a home run for Washington. Teammates Simone Ivery and Faith Partozoti had one double apiece.

Burgettstown 16, Bridgeport, Ohio 5

Layla Sherman had four RBI on three hits in Burgettstown’s victory over Bridgeport, Ohio, in non-section play.

Sherman had two doubles and hit a home run.

The Blue Devils’ Andi Midler knocked in two runs with a triple. She also doubled.

Reya Sentipal had four hits, including a double, and two RBI for Burgettstown.

Montour 8, South Fayette 2

Jana Hess and Shania Cope hit home runs in Montour’s victory over South Fayette in non-section play.

The Lions’ Cam Valentino and Addie Vierra had two hits apiece. Valentino had one RBI and was 2-for-3.

Cope doubled and knocked in three runs for the Spartans.

Thomas Jefferson 12, Belle Vernon 2

Thomas Jefferson scored three runs in the third and six in the fourth to defeat Belle Vernon in non-section play.

The Jaguars’ Ella Gruber had a home run and two RBI. Teammate Emma Desiore doubled and knocked in three runs.

Belle Vernon’s Sydney Stark had two hits, including a double, and one RBI. Katie Sokol had a run-scoring single for the Leopards.
