High school baseball: Washington back in WPIAL playoffs
Caleb Patton and William Callan combined on a four-hitter as Washington clinched its first WPIAL playoff berth since 2015 with an 8-1 win over Beth-Center on Monday night in a Class 2A Section 1 game played at Wild Things Park.
Washington (5-6, 8-8) scored in each of the first six innings. Joe Wilson had a triple and Ian Callan drove in two runs.
Patton allowed three hits and one run over 5⅔ innings. He struck out nine.
Beth-Center (4-7, 8-9) can still make the playoffs. The Bulldogs must win the second game of the series, which will be played tonight in Fredericktown.
Waynesburg 10, McGuffey 2
Alex VanSickle went 4-for-4 with three doubles and four RBI, powering Waynesburg to a 10-2 victory over visiting McGuffey in Class 3A Section 4.
The win makes Waynesburg 8-2 in the section and 11-3 overall.
Ethan Kiger drove in three runs to support the winning pitching of Trenton Zupper. Zupper also had a double, as did teammate Derek Turcheck.
McGuffey is 6-5 in the section and 6-7 overall.
Fort Cherry 8, Jefferson-Morgan 2
Colton Temple homered, Matt Sieg doubled and Ryan Huey pitched a four-hitter as Fort Cherry defeated Jefferson-Morgan 9-1 in Class A Section 1.
Fort Cherry is 8-2 in the section and 10-3 overall. The Rangers have clinched at least a share of the section title.
Burgettstown 10, Frazier 0
Burgettstown is assured of at least a share of the Class 2A Section 1 title after routing host Frazier, 10-0, in six innings.
Matthew Bredel pitched a two-hit shutout. He struck out five.
Sam Elich had a big game at the plate for the Blue Devils (9-1, 9-3-1) by going 3-for-4 with a double and five RBI. Carson Tkalcevic hit two doubles and drove in three, and Brodie Kuzior doubled.
Charleroi 10, Chartiers-Houston 3
Charleroi scored seven runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to beat Chartiers-Houston 10-3 in Class 2A Section 1.
Logan Koteles had a tiebreaking single in the Cougars’ big inning, which leaves Charleroi at 7-4 in section and 10-6 overall. C-H slips to 8-3, 8-8.
Brock Henderson drove in three for the Cougars. Luke Camden had a triple for the Bucs.
Thomas Jefferson 7, Trinity 6
Thomas Jefferson scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning to take the lead, then had to hold off a Trinity charge in the bottom of the frame for a 7-6 win in a non-section game at Ross Memorial Park.
TJ trailed 5-4 entering the seventh.
Matthew Robaugh went 3-for-4 for Trinity (8-8) and had one of the Hillers’ six doubles.
Jonah Williaamson drove in two and had a double.
South Fayette 6, Montour 3
South Fayette was a 6-3 winner over Montour in a non-section game.
Winning pitcher Eli Rose allowed two runs (one earned) over five innings.
Upper St. Clair 3, Canon-McMillan 1
Aidan Crochier hit a two-run homer as Upper St. Clair edged Canon-McMillan 3-1 in a non-section game.
Cam Russell smacked two doubles for C-M (7-11).
Bethel Park 1, Ringgold 0
Ryan Walsh hit a solo home run to lead off the bottom of the seventh inning to give Bethel Park a 1-0 victory over Ringgold in a non-section contest.
Carmichaels 21, Mapletown 3
Carmichaels used a nine-run first and 11-run third to beat host Mapletown 21-3 in a Class A Section 1 game.
Carmichaels is 7-4 in the section and 10-4 overall.
Winning pitcher Liam Lohr went 2-for-2 with two doubles and two RBI. Dom Colarusso also had a double. Sixteen different Mikes had at least one RBI or scored a run.
The only runs for Mapletown came on a home run by A.J. Vanata.
California 2, West Greene 1
Weston Monticelli pitched a four-hit complete game and California scored two runs in the fourth inning to beat West Greene 2-1 in Class A Section 1.
Monticelli struck out four and walked two. West Greene pitcher Darren Knight also threw a four-hitter. He struck out 10 and did not walk a batter.
The Trojans’ run came on consecutive RBI singles by Spencer Petrucci and Eli Carpenter.
