Canon-Mac softball upsets 3rd-seeded NA
Canon-McMillan, which is known for its hitting, won with pitching and defense in the WPIAL Class 6A softball playoffs Wednesday.
Canon-McMillan’s Lyla Mowery threw a five-hitter and Olivia Ford tripled and scored two runs as the Big Macs knocked off third-seeded North Allegheny 3-1 at Upper St. Clair’s Boyce Mayview Park.
The win sends sixth-seeded Canon-McMillan (7-11) into the semifinals Wednesday against second-seeded Seneca Valley, which received an opening round bye.
Mowery did not walk a batter and the Big Macs played flawless defense. Mowery lost her shutout bid in the bottom of the seventh inning, when NA scored on a two-out RBI single.
C-M scored single runs in the first, third and fourth innings. Ford began the game with a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly by Hailey Swope. Emily’s Booher’s single in the third scored Ford and made it 2-0.
An error on a bunt enabled C-M to push its lead to 3-0 in the fourth.
