High school baseball : Carmichaels upsets top-seeded Union

Liam Lohr ignited a three-run, first-inning uprising, then pitched a complete-game three-hitter to propel eighth-seeded Carmichaels past No. 1 Union, 3-1, in a WPIAL Class A baseball quarterfinal game Monday at Burkett Park.

Lohr struck out seven, walked just one and had two of the Mikes’ six hits.

Carmichaels (13-4) advances to today’s semifinals against fourth-seeded Bishop Canevin which defeated Western Beaver 10-0. That game will be played Tuesday, 4:30 p.m. at Ross Memorial Park.

Dom Colarusso led off the game against Scotties starting and losing pitcher Rocco Galmarini with a single to center, stole second and scored on Lohr’s single to left. Lohr also stole second and came home on Robbie Wilson-Jones’ single to right to make ot 2-0. Colin Andrews added an RBI fielder’s choice later in the inning.

The Scotties (13-4) got their first two hits and only run in the fourth inning. Mike Gunn reached on an infield single and advanced all the way to third on Dom Cuttitrone’s ground out to third. Galmarini followed with a run-scoring single to center.

Galmarini also went the distance. The left-hander struck out six, walked one and didn’t allow a hit over the final five innings.

Seton LaSalle 10, Chartiers-Houston 1

Three Seton LaSalle pitchers combined on a four-hitter as the Rebels defeated Chartiers-Houston 10-1 in a Class 2A quarterfinal game at West Mifflin High School.

Third-seeded Seton LaSalle (15-3) scored six runs over the first two innings.

Josh Burkholder and Aric White led the Rebels’ nine-hit attack by driving in two runs each.

Chartiers-Houston (10-9) scored its run in the fifth inning on a bases-loaded walk to Anthony Romano that sent home Paul Williamson and cut Seton LaSalle’s lead to 6-1. The Rebels added two runs in both the fifth and sixth innings.
