High school basketball: Ringgold opens season with win over Charleroi

The Ringgold boys basketball team opened its season with a win Friday afternoon over rival Charleroi, 61-46, in the Mon Valley Shootout at South Allegheny.

Ringgold led 23-22 at halftime and broke open the game with a 24-9 scoring edge in the pivotal third quarter.

Szyair Dungee and Demetri Lowe each scored 13 points to lead the Rams.

Jackson Keranko paced Charleroi with 13 points and Shea Smith followed with 12.

Thomas Jefferson 76, Belle Vernon 58

Nick Trklj scored 26 points, leading four Thomas Jefferson players in double figures, as the Jaguars defeated Belle Vernon 76-58 in the Mon valley Shootout at South Allegheny.

Noah Kaszer added 21 points, Justin Fry had 12 and Brady Kraus 10 for TJ.

Zion Moore poured in 23 points to pace Belle Vernon and Curtis Wade contributed 14 points.

Belle Vernon led 34-30 at halftime but TJ dominated the second half. The Jaguars forged a 54-45 lead at the end of the third quarter.

McGuffey 48, Avella 34

McGuffey outscored Avella in every quarter and defeated the Eagles 48-34 in the Highlanders’ season-opening tournament.

No other game details were reported.

McGuffey will play Chartiers-Houston in the 3 p.m. championship game today. Avella plays Frazier in the consolation at 1 p.m.

Chartiers-Houston defeated Frazier in the tournament’s opening game, 53-29.

Girls results

McGuffey 52, Burgettstown 34

Taylor Schumacher and Lexi Ewing combined for 40 points, powering McGuffey to a 52-34 victory over Burgettstown in the Avella tournament.

Schumacher led the Highlanders with 26 points as she helped McGuffey forge a 20-6 lead at the end of one quarter.

Ewing finished with 14 points.

West Greene 46, West Greene 40

Kenda Tharp scored 17 points and West Greene used a fast start to beat Beth-Center 46-40 in the season-opening Donna M. Furnier Tip-Off at Jefferson-Morgan.

West Greene started the game with four consecuti9ve three-pointers as part of a 14-2 run. The Pioneers led 19-12 after one quarter.

B-C closed to within 25-24 at halftime but West Greene took the lead for good with a 14-9 scoring edge in the third quarter.

Madelyn Roberts tossed in 13 points for West Greene.

Violet Trump had a double-double of 16 points and 11 rebounds for Beth-Center. Callie Dorsey scored 10 points.

Ligonier Valley 41, Carmichaels 20

Ligonier Valley held Carmichaels to single-digit scoring in every quarter en route to a 41-20 victory over the Mikes in the Donna M. Furnier Tip-Off at Jefferson-Morgan.

Syndee Faust had 15 points and eight rebounds to lead the winners. Jada Pope had a team-high 11 rebounds.

Ali Jacobs tossed in 10 points to lead Carmichaels, which trailed 19-9 at halftime.

Geibel Catholic 55, Jefferson-Morgan 41

Emma Larkin scored 21 points, Mallory Clemmer added 18 and Geibel Catholic defeated host Jefferson-Morgan 55-41 in the Rockets’ Donna M. Furnier Tip-Off.

Bailey Cervone scored a team-high 13 points for J-M, which fell behind 35-17 at halftime before outsourcing Geibel in the second half. Catelynn Teagarden and Ava Wood each finished with nine points for the Rockets.

Avella 45, Mapletown 30

Ava Frank scored 11 of her game-high 19 points in the first half and Avella defeated Mapletown 45-30 in the opening round of the Eagles’ tournament.

Avella will play McGuffey in the championship game Saturday.

Avella was tied 21-21 at halftime but the Eagles limited the Maples to only one field goal and 11 points in the second half. The Eagles’ Haleigh Rish scored eight of her nine points in the second half.

Helena Cumpston had a team-high 12 points for Mapletown and Makenna Lotspeich scored 10.
