The defending champion Bentworth boys and the Peters Township girls received No. 1 seeds in their respective classifications when the WPIAL released the brackets Wednesday for its soccer playoffs.
The postseason begins tonight with preliminary round games that involve four area teams. In boys Class 2A, Belle Vernon will host West Mifflin at 6:30 p.m. A Class A doubleheader is on tap at California, where the Trojans’ girls team will play Greensburg Central Catholic at 6 p.m. followed by the Cal boys against Chartiers-Houston.
Bentworth (15-0) is the top seed in Class A after winning the Section 2 championship. The Bearcats have outscored their opponents by a whopping 106-4 margin. Bentworth will play Saturday (2 p.m.) at Peters Township against the winner of the California-Chartiers-Houston preliminary round match.
The Bearcats are in line for a potential third matchup against section rival Beth-Center in the quarterfinals. B-C will play Trinity Christian on Saturday at Peters Township (4 p.m.) in an 8-9 seed matchup.
The Peters Township girls (16-0-1), who won the Section 2 title, are top seeded in Class 4A. The Indians, who have allowed only eight goals all season while playing in a highly competitive section, received a first-round bye and will play Oct. 24 at home against either Pine-Richland or Latrobe.
Canon-McMillan also is in the Class 4A playoffs and the sixth-seeded Big Macs will host Hempfield on Monday at 6:30 p.m.

In boys Class 3A, Trinity is the No. 10 seed and plays Saturday (1 p.m.) at Franklin Regional. Ringgold is the No. 13 seed and plays at Latrobe on Saturday (2 p.m.).
