Carlynton holds off Wash High, 29-28
CARNEGIE – John Sciulli had three short touchdown runs and Carlynton’s offense was able to run out the final six minutes to hold on for a 28-27 win over Washington in a key Class 2A Century Conference game Friday night at Honus Wagner Field.
The Washington loss, combined with Seton LaSalle’s victory over Keystone Oaks, gives the Rebels the outright conference title. They play at Washington next weekend.
Carlynton (2-3, 5-4) stayed alive in the playoff race. The Cougars have the WPIAL’s longest active streak of seasons without a postseason berth.
The Prexies (3-2, 5-4) led 19-14 at halftime but Carlynton grabbed a 28-19 lead on the strength of second-half TD runs of one and four yards by Sciulli. After the latter score, Washington committed two offside penalties on the conversion before Carlynton quarterback Devonte Dean ran in the two-pointer that gave the Cougars a 28-19 lead with 10:28 remaining.
Washington then drove down the field and scored on a seven-yard TD pass from Tristan Reed to Caleb Patton, the second time the duo hooked up for a score. Reed threw a two-point conversion pass to Ameer Nelson that cut Carlynton’s lead to 29-28 with 6:09 remaining.
The Cougars, however, ran all the time off the clock with a long drive deep into Washington territory.
Reed threw an 18-yard TD pass to Patton to start the scoring and Sciulli had a one-yard plunge that made it 7-7 in the first quarter.
The Prexies took a 13-7 lead on a 63-yard scoring scamper by Nelson. A two-yard plunge by Dean put Carlynton up 14-13 in the second quarter, but the Prexies went into halftime with the lead after Trenton Grooms bulled his way into the end from three yards out with 1:03 remaining.
