PT’s Lusk, Benson in contention at PIAA golf

STATE COLLEGE – WPIAL Class 3A champions Colton Lusk and Ellie Benson, both of Peters Township, are in contention after the first day of the PIAA Individual Golf Championships at the Penn State Golf Courses.
Lusk shot an opening round of 5-under par 67 Monday on the White course and is tied for second place. The PT senior is only one shot behind leader Dylan Ramsey of Cedar Crest. Lusk is tied with Fleetwood sophomore Cameron Peffel.
Twenty-three golfers in the boys Class 3A field shot under par.
Lusk had a solid round that included five birdies – four on par-5 holes. He did not have a bogey on the scorecard.
Belle Vernon junior Jordan Mocello is tied for 24th following a round of even-par 72. South Fayette junior Sam Bishop is tied for 40th after shooting 76, and Peters Township senior Griffin Hansberry is tied for 51st at 7-over 79.
Benson is tied for fourth place in the girls 3A competition after shooting a solid round of even-par 72, also on the White course. She had two birdies – both par-4 holes, Nos. 4 and 9 – and a pair of bogeys on Nos. 1 and 16.
Benson trails WPIAL runner-up Mya Morgan of Elizabeth Forward by four strokes. Morgan shot 4-under 68. She had six birdies and two bogeys.
Peters Township has four golfers in the top 31. Betty Glyptis is tied for 25th at 81, Sophia Severns is 30th following a round of 83 and Brooke Vowcheck shot 84 and is 31st.
McGuffey’s Logan Crowe shot an opening round of 3-over 75 on the Blue course and is tied for 20th place in the boys Class 2A competition. Crowe trails co-leaders Alan Evans of Schuylkill Have and Ethan Dai of Quaker Valley, by seven strokes. Crowe’s round included two birdies.
Charleroi freshman Levi Large is tied for 34th after shooting 78.
The final round will be held today and the team competition, which will include the Peters Township girls, is set for Wednesday.
