Fast-starting Fort Cherry handles Burgettstown
BURGETTSTOWN – Matt Sieg passed for three touchdowns and ran for two scores as Fort Cherry defeated Burgettstown 42-0 in a Class A Black Hills Conference game Friday night at Hill Memorial Stadium.
Fort Cherry (3-0, 6-0) scored touchdowns on its first four possessions to take control of the game.
Sieg opened the scoring with a 49-yard touchdown on a fourth-down play less than two minutes into the game. The junior quarterback then threw a 19-yard TD pass to a wide-open Shane Cornali that made it 14-0.
In the second quarter, Sieg hit Evan Rogers and Nate Wolfe for touchdown passes of 14 and 13 yards, respectively, as the Rangers took a 28-0 lead into halftime. The TD pass to Wolfe was set up by a 52-yard pass from Sieg to Cornali.
Sieg completed 11 of 15 passes for 168 yards.
After Burgettstown (0-3, 1-4) turned the ball over on downs in the third quarter, Sieg capped a seven-play drive with a six-yard touchdown run that made it 35-0 and kicked in the running clock rule.
The only scoring in the fourth quarter came when Fort Cherry’s Eli Salvini bolted 77 yards up the middle for a touchdown.
Salvini finished with 103 yards on four attempts. Sieg had 94 yards on six carries.
