Max Henson made history Friday afternoon by becoming the first boys tennis player in Belle Vernon history to win a WPIAL singles championship.

Henson, a junior, defeated North Catholic’s Justin Garvey, 6-1, 6-1 in the Class 2A final at Bethel Park.

Henson was the top-seeded player in the field and Garvey was seeded second.

He is the second Belle Vernon tennis player to win a singles title this year, joining Gabby Dusi, who won a girls championship in the fall.

Henson is a Cleveland State recruit.

Belle Vernon does not field a full tennis team, but Henson entered the WPIAL singles postseason as the top seed in Class 2A Section 2 and won the section title.

He advances to the state tournament, May 23-24 at the Hershey Racquet Club.
