High school softball: Unbeaten South Park deals C-H first loss

South Park scored the winning run on a bunt single in the top of the seventh inning as the Eagles edged Chartiers-Houston 4-3 in a battle of undefeated teams from different classifications.

South Park (11-0), from Class 3A, battled back from a 3-1 deficit by scoring two runs in the sixth to tie the score. In seventh, Emma Hays hit a leadoff double and one out later scored from third base when Sydney Dubyak put down a bunt single.

The loss dropped Chartiers-Houston, of Class 2A, to 10-1.

The game was a stellar pitching matchup between South Park’s Sydney Sekely and Chartiers-Houston’s Meadow Ferri. Sekely struck out 13, did not walk a batter and tossed a six-hitter. One of the C-H hits was a double by Taryne Drilak. Seanna Riggle had two hits for the Bucs.

Ferri struck out 11, walked two and scattered five hits.

Carmichaels 3, Jefferson-Morgan 2

Bailey Barnyak had a dozen strikeouts to help Carmichaels edge Jefferson-Morgan, 3-2, in a key Class A Section 2 game.

Ashlynn Snyders had a two-run double in the top of the sixth to get the Rockets (2-2, 5-3) within a run, but Barnyak recorded back-to-back strikeouts with the tying run on second base in the seventh.

Kaitlyn Waggett tripled and Ke’Lani Chun and Ashton Batis doubled for the Mikes (4-0, 8-0).

McGuffey 4-11, South Park 6-6

McGuffey and Keystone Oaks split a doubleheader in Class 3A Section 3. KO won the opener 6-4 by scoring five runs over the final two innings. McGuffey had its own comeback win in the nightcap, scoring eight runs in the top of the seventh for an 11-6 win.

In the McGuffey win, the Highlanders (3-2, 6-4) took the lead at 8-6 on a two-run double by Courtney Bedillion, who had three hits. Makenna Crothers, Mackenzie Shrader and winning pitcher Miley Main also doubled. Main struck out nine.

Keystone Oaks is 3-2 in section, 5-5 overall.

Trinity 16, Albert Gallatin 0

Trinity played a game of double or nothing in a 16-0 rout in four innings of host Albert Gallatin in Class 5A Section 4.

The Hillers (6-1, 8-5) had seven doubles among their 14 hits, including two each by Hanna Suhoksi and Riley Venick. Suhoski went 3-for-3 with four runs and two RBI from the leadoff spot. Maddie Ray, Remmie Seitz and Alexa Sawacki each had a double. Seitz and Madelyn Hall drove in three runs apiece.

Pitchers Gabby Humphreys and Kaylee Danneker combined on a two-out shutout.

South Fayette 8, Moon 4

After giving up 15 runs in a loss to Moon on Tuesday, South Fayette bounced and beat the Tigers 8-4 to split the two-game series in Class 5A Section 3.

Evie Vuono and Maddie Cavenaugh both had big games for South Fayette (3-1, 8-3). Vuono had three hits, including a two-run homer, and three RBI. Cavenaugh was the winning pitcher and helped her cause with a double, triple and three runs. Cavenaugh threw a six-hitter and struck out seven.

Bethel Park 19, Peters Township 9

Bethel Park defeated visiting Peters Township 19-9 in a six-inning Class 5A Section 4 game.

Madi Timms hit a home run and drove in three, as did Sia Spano for Bethel Park (4-2, 8-2).

Lucy Wicker had a double and two RBI to lead PT (0-7, 2-9). Avery Carson also hit a double.

Charleroi 13, Steel Valley 8

Charleroi won its second game in as many outings in Class 3A Section 3, beating Steel Valley, 13-8.

The Cougars (2-0, 4-4) scored seven times in the second inning. Nori Stringa-Smith had a four-RBI day that included a three-run homer in the Cougars’ big inning.

Three Charleroi pitchers combined for 11 strikeouts.

West Greene 12, Avella 1

West Greene scored four runs in the fourth and fifth innings to break the game open in a 12-1 six-inning win over Avella in Class A Section 2.

Marissa Tharp, Kylee Davis, Katie Brudnock and Khyler Davis had two hits each for the Pioneers (5-1, 10-1) and Payton Gilbert was the winning pitcher with eight strikeouts. Ginny Smith had two hits, including a double for the Eagles (0-4, 1-8).

Canon-McMillan 3, North Allegheny 0

Brooke Bumer pitched a complete game three-hitter with nine strikeouts to power Canon-McMillan (5-5, 7-6) to a 3-0 victory over North Allegheny (4-4, 5-6) in Class 6A Section 1.

The Big Macs plated two runs in the first inning on an RBI double by Skylah Steban and an RBI single by Kiersten Williams. K Merigo added some insurance with a run-scoring double in the seventh.

West Mifflin 9, Belle Vernon 4

Mia Bey homered twice and had five RBI for West Mifflin (6-1, 8-4) in a 9-4 win over Belle Vernon (3-3, 5-7) in Class 4A Section 2.

Rylie Dobnak pitched a complete game for the Titans and had a dozen strikeouts.

Lauren VanDivner homered and drove in three runs for the Leopards. Mailey Hayes singled twice.

Beth-Center 9, Mapletown 5

Alli Lynch smacked a three-run triple in the second inning as part of a four RBI day for Beth-Center (2-3, 2-7) in a 9-5 win over Mapletown (1-4, 3-7).

Kendall Welsh singled three times and was the winning pitcher with five strikeouts and five walks. MaKenna Lotspeich had an RBI triple for the Maples in the top of the first.
