High school baseball: Waynesburg suffers first loss

Belle Vernon broke a tie by scoring four runs in the fifth inning and beat host Waynesburg 8-5 in a nonsection game Thursday.

It was the first loss of the season for Waynesburg (10-1). Belle Vernon (9-2) bounced back from losing two section games to Elizabeth Forward.

The score was tied 4-4 in the fifth when Alex Bastedo hit an RBI single and two ensuing Waynesburg errors allowed three runs to score.

Chase Petrosky had two RBI for Belle Vernon to back Ian Porter’s 5 1-3 innings of one-run relief.

Derek Turcheck went 3-for-4 with a double and three RBI for Waynesburg. Alex VanSickle also doubled.

Jeannette 2, Carmichaels 0

Wyatt Schaffer threw a five-hit shutout and Jeannette upset host Carmichaels 2-0 in Class A Section 1.

The loss prevented Carmichaels (5-3, 6-4) from moving into a tie for first place in the section.

Jeannette (1-4, 3-7) pushed across single runs in the fourth and fifth innings.

Schaffer walked one and struck out two, needing only 84 pitches to throw the complete game.

Fort Cherry 7, McKeesport 3

Colton Temple homered and threw 3 1-3 scoreless innings of relief, sparking Fort Cherry to a 7-3 win over McKeesport in a nonsection game.

Temple broke a 3-3 tie in the fifth inning with a two-run homer that scored Landon Trnavsky, who had a double and triple.

Fort Cherry (6-4) has won five of its last six.

Trinity 8, Albert Gallatin 0

Trinity took advantage of four errors and nine walks by Albert Gallatin to beat the Colonials 8-1 in a nonsection game.

Three Trinity (5-5) pitchers combined on a two-hitter. Jonah Williamson drew three walks and scored three times.

Burgettstown 4, South Park 2

Burgettstown scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning and pitchers Wyatt Stevenson and Blake Neal made sure they were enough as the Blue Devils topped South Park 4-2 in a nonsection contest.

Stevenson and Neal combined on a three-hitter as the Blue Devils ran their record to 6-1.

South Park led 1-0 before Burgettstown tied it in the first on a sacrifice fly by Neal and took the lead for good with an RBI single from Brian Charles.

Burgettstown’s Sam Elich had the game’s only extra-base hit, a double.

Mt. Lebanon 3, Canon-McMillan 2

Mt. Lebanon scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning and went on to a 3-2 win over Canon-McMillan in Class 6A Section 2.

Two Mt. Lebanon pitchers combined on an eight-hitter but did not issue any walks. Graham Keen hit a two-run double in the first inning for the Blue Devils.

Brayden Radue and Colin Yeager doubled for Canon-Mac (6-3, 10-4).

McGuffey 10, Bentworth 0

Lincoln Johnson pitched a one-hit shutout as McGuffey defeated Bentworth 10-0 in a nonsection game at EQT Park.

Wyatt Hildreth went 3-for-3 and scored three runs to lead McGuffey (8-4) at the plate. Johnson helped his cause with a triple, and Brogan Meighen and Reno Presto doubled.

Johnson struck out nine and walked two.
