High school softball: Klages powers McGuffey to section win

Nicole Klages went 4-for-4 with two doubles and scored four runs, Julianna Ward homered and Makenna Crothers fired a three-hit shutout as McGuffey defeated Charleroi 15-0 in a four-inning Class 3A Section 3 game Thursday.

Crothers struck out six and didn’t walk a batter as the Highlanders improved to 4-2 in section and 7-4 overall.

Ward, Miley Main and Maura Janovich each had three-hit games for McGuffey.

Chartiers-Houston 19, Fort Cherry 0

Ella Richey went 3-for-3 and was a single shy of hitting for the cycle, Taryne Drilak threw a one-hitter and Chartiers-Houston beat host Fort Cherry 19-0 in a four-inning game in Class 2A Section 3.

Chartiers-Houston (5-0, 11-1) had 10 extra-base hits, including home runs by Meadow Ferri and Richey. Lauren Rush, Drilak, Cherish Wilson, Aubree Randolph and Zaylee Fonner each doubled. Fonner added a triple.

The only hit allowed by Drilak was a double by Lila Schneider.

Canon-McMillan 8, Mt. Lebanon 3

Hailey Swope homered and scored three times, powering Canon-McMillan to an 8-3 win over Mt. Lebanon in Class 6A Section 1.

C-M improves to 6-5 in section and 8-6 overall.

The Big Macs broke a 1-1 tie by scoring five times in the third inning. Winning pitcher Brooke Blumer worked into the sixth inning and struck out 11.

Brownsville 7, Washington 4

Ava Clark struck out 11 and hit a two-run double, leading Brownsville to a 7-4 win at Washington in Class 2A Section 4.

Zkyiah Hines had a double for Wash High.

Frazier 16, Bentworth 8

Frazier scored nine runs in the top of the eighth inning to beat Bentworth 16-8 in Class 2A Section 4.

Frazier scored nine unearned runs, taking advantage of three errors by Bentworth (2-2, 5-5).

The Bearcats’ Nora Lindley smacked a grand slam in the first inning. Zoie McDonald had three hits including a double. Sofia Gaussa had three singles and scored four runs.

Uniontown 6, Belle Vernon 5

Uniontown scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to rally and beat Belle Vernon 6-5 in Class 4A Section 2.

Winning pitcher Emmaleigh Noah and Juliet White homered for Uniontown (5-3, 7-5).

Belle Vernon (3-4, 5-8) did all of its scoring in the second inning. Mailey Hayes drove in a pair of runs.
