High school softball: Tedrow strikes out 19 in Waynesburg win

Gina Tedrow fired a four-hitter and struck out 19 batters as Waynesburg won at Bentworth 3-1 in a key Class 2A Section 4 on Monday.

Waynesburg improves to 3-1 in section and 6-4 overall. Bentworth is 2-3, 5-6.

Waynesburg scored two unearned runs in the fourth inning for a 2-0 lead. One run scored on an RBI groundout the other on a single by Bre Kerr.

Bentworth pulled to within 2-1 in fifth, scoring on a passed ball with the bases loaded but the Bearcats made the final out of the inning at home plate when another runner attempted to score on a pitch that went to the backstop.

In the sixth, Bentworth had runners on second and third with one out, but Tedrow recorded two strikeouts to end the threat.

The Raiders tacked on an insurance run in the seventh on a two-out RBI single by Avery Davis.

Waynesburg’s Koli Rostoka was the only player with more than one hit in the game.

West Allegheny 9, South Fayette 4

South Fayette outhit host West Allegheny but the Lions committed four errors that led to seven unearned runs and a 9-4 loss to the Indians in Class 5A Section 3.

West Allegheny moves to 4-1 in the section and 8-4 overall. South Fayette is 3-2, 8-4.

Brenna Dunn led South Fayette at the plate, going 4-for-4 with a home run, double, three runs and two RBI. Maddie Cavenaugh had three hits including a double and Makenna Galish doubled for the Lions, who had a 14-10 edge in hits.

Marissa Palaima had two doubles and scored twice for West Allegheny. The Indians scored five runs in the third inning for a 6-2 lead.

Seton LaSalle 3, Burgettstown 1

Seton LaSalle edged Burgettstown 3-1 in a rain-shortened, five-inning Class 2A Section 3 game.

Seton LaSalle led 2-1 after one inning and held off Burgettstown, which was held to one hit.

N Peters Township ended an eight-game slide with an 11-6 win over Albert Gallatin in Class 5A Section 4.

The Indians (1-7, 3-9) had 14 hits, including two doubles each by Avery Carson and Braylin Fusco. Madi Renda drove in three runs to back the winning pitching of Laney Mountain AG (0-6, 2-7) scored five of their runs in the seventh inning.

Belle Vernon 14, Ringgold 3

Katie Sokol and Kaylee Sypolt each drove in three runs as Belle Vernon overpowered visiting Ringgold 14-3 in five innings in Class 4A Section 2.

The Leopards (4-4, 6-8) trailed 2-1 before scoring four times in the third inning and seven times in the fourth.

Sypolt and Mia Zubovic each doubled for Belle Vernon and Maddie Grisnik was the winning pitcher.

Alice Ranous drove in two ryan for Ringgold (0-6, 0-12).
