High school softball: South Fayette knocks off section leader
Maddie Cavenaugh homered, tripled and drove in three runs, powering South Fayette to a 9-5 win over Class 5A Section 3 leader Chartiers Valley on Tuesday.
It was the first section loss for CV (5-1, 7-4). South Fayette (4-2, 9-4) bounced back from a loss Monday to West Allegheny.
The Lions led 2-1 before breaking the game open with a four-run fourth and a three-run fifth.
Brenna Dunn tripled, Makenna Galish doubled and drove in a pair and Liv Bonacci added a double to back the winning pitching of Emma Earley, who struck out eight.
Waynesburg 12, Washington 1
Gina Tedrow fired a one-hitter and drove in four runs, sparking Waynesburg to a 12-1 victory over host Washington in Class 2A Section 4.
The win moves Waynesburg to 4-1 in section and 7-4 overall. The Raiders are tied for first place in the section with Brownsville.
Tedrow struck out 11 and walked two. The lone hit for Wash High (0-5, 4-5) was a triple by Tateionna Warren.
Waynesburg had 15 hits, including eight that went for extra bases. Tedrow was 3-for-4 with two doubles and four RBI. Eva Pester also went 3-for-4 with a double and triple. Avery Davis, Bre Kerr, Kalee Piper and Ellie Makel each had a double.
Thomas Jefferson 12, Trinity 8
Thomas Jefferson scored seven runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and defeated Trinity 12-8 in a key Class 5A Section 4 game.
TJ (5-2, 7-5) swept the series against Trinity (6-2, 8-6), which began the day in first place in the section.
Maddie Ray had a big day for the Hillers, going 3-for-3 with a three-run homer and four RBI. Ally Krenzelak also had three hits and Emma Starr doubled.
Trinity led 6-5 before TJ’s big inning.
Avella 9, Beth-Center 7
Avery Rado went 3-for-3 and scored twice, and Avella used a five-run second inning to beat host Beth-Center 9-7 in Class A Section 2.
Kendall Welsh had a huge game for B-C, going 4-for-4 with four runs, a double and a triple. Bella Stepp also doubled for the Bulldogs.
Carmichaels 15, Mapletown 0
Undefeated Carmichaels scored nine times in the third inning to finish off a 15-0 win over Mapletown in Class A Section 2.
Ali Jacobs tripled and drove in two, and Ke’Lani Chun doubled and drove in a pair as the Mikes moved to 5-0 in section and 9-0 overall.
Winning pitcher Bailey Barnyak threw a three-inning no-hitter with seven strikeouts.
N Brooklyn Robinson pitched a one-hitter and Burgettstown took advantage of seven walks and six errors by Fort Cherry to beat the Rangers 17-0 in three innings in Class 2A Section 3.
Robinson, who struck out five, helped her cause by hitting a triple. Layla Sherman and Madison Keating doubled for the Blue Devils (2-3, 5-6).
McGuffey 9, Charleroi 1
McGuffey scored six runs in the first inning and cruised to a 9-1 win over Charleroi in Class 3A Section 3.
Winning pitcher Makenna Crothers scattered six hits, striking out six.
Miley Main, Courtney Bedillion and Mackenzie Shrader each doubled for McGuffey (6-2, 9-4).
Hempfield 10, Canon-McMillan 0
Riley Miller threw a two-hit shutout and hit one of Hempfield’s three home runs in a 10-0 win over Canon-McMillan in Class 6A Section 1.
Hempfield remained undefeated at 9-0, 13-0.
Belle Vernon 17, Ringgold 3
Lauren VanDivner went 4-for-4, Kaylee Sypolt hit a home run and Belle vernon rolled to a 17-3 win over Ringgold.
Lily Crawford and Mailey Hayes each drove in three runs for the Leopards, who had 21 hits.
