High school baseball: Waynesburg moves closer to section title
Waynesburg moved closer to clinching the Class 3A Section 4 title by defeating visiting McGuffey 9-2 on Wednesday to complete a two-game series sweep.
The Raiders are 8-0 in the section and 12-1 overall. They lead the section by three games in the loss column over second-place Charleroi with four games remaining. Waynesburg closes the regular-season with a series against Charleroi.
Winning pitcher Austin Surber struck out eight over six innings, allowing three hits and two unearned runs. He helped his cause with a double and two RBI.
Canon-McMillan 12, Hempfield 1
Class 6A Section 2 leader Canon-McMillan scored seven runs over the final two innings and defeated host Hempfield, 12-1.
Troy Stimpson hit two doubles and drove in three runs to back the winning pitching of M.J. Maruschak, who tossed a five-hitter with 10 strikeouts.
C-M is 8-3 in section and 12-4 overall.
Trinity 1, South Fayette 0
Ayvari Chandler’s bases-loaded singled with one out single in the bottom of the seventh inning scored Owen Samogala and gave Trinity a 1-0 win over South Fayette and a sweep of the Class 4A Section 2 series.
Zach Schrader and Jackson Burt combined on a seven-hit shutout with Burt getting the win with 2 1-3 innings of relief.
Derek Falvo hi two doubles for Trinity (4-4, 7-5). Trey Skeen doubled for South Fayette (5-5, 8-6).
Burgettstown 3, Bentworth 0
Matthew Bredel pitched 6 2-3 shutout innings as Burgettstown blanked host Bentworth 3-0 in Class 2A Section 1.
Bredel struck out 10 and allowed only five hits. The Blue Devils (7-1, 9-1) scored twice in the second inning and turned the game over to their pitching.
California 1, Frazier 0
Ricky Lawson and Caden Monitcelli combined on a five-hit shutout and Eli Carpenter drove in the game’s only run as California won at Frazier 1-0 in Class 2A Section 1.
The teams split the two-game series with each team winning a 1-0 game.
Carpenter had an RBI single in the fourth inning. That was enough for Lawson, who scattered five hits over 6 2-3 innings. He struck out five. Monticelli got the final out for a save.
California’s Chase Cicchitto had the game’s only extra-base hit, a double.
Jefferson-Morgan 20, Mapletown 4
John Woodward went 3-for-3 with a double, four RBI and four runs, powering Jefferson-Morgan to a 20-4 win in four innings at Mapletown in Class A Section 1.
J-M (7-3, 8-3) scored eight runs in both the first and second innings. The Rockets had 15 hits, including doubles by Brayden Ellsworth, Dayten Marion and Liam Rogers. Drew Adams was the winning pitcher.
Carson Vanata homered for Mapletown.
Greensburg CC 8, Avella 6
Greensburg Central Catholic scored six runs in the fourth inning and went on to an 8-6 victory over host Avella in a key Class A Section 1 game.
Avella (6-4, 10-4) committed five errors that led to six unearned runs for GCC (6-1, 8-2). The Eagles led 2-0 before GCC’s big inning that included three errors and two walks.
Avella scored four times in its half of the fourth to tie the game but GCC pushed across single runs in the fifth and sixth.Sean Walker hit a home run in the sixth.
Avella had 13 hits including a double by Chas Rush and three singles by Brayden Fuller.
Seton LaSalle 16, Washington 0
Seton LaSalle scored in every inning and completed a two-game sweep of Washington with a 16-0 win in five innings in Class 3A Section 4.
Seton LaSalle sits in third place in the section and 6-4 and 7-6 overall.
Connor Rothhaar went 3-for-3 with a home run and two pitchers combined on a two-hit shutout.
Jeannette 10, West Greene 3
Noah Rattigan drove in three runs and Evyn Yargeau pitched a complete game as Jeannette defeated West Greene 10-3 in Class A Section 1 to complete a series sweep.
Jeannette (3-4, 5-7) led 5-3 before breaking the game open with a five-run sixth inning.
Xavier Lucey and Darren Knight each had a double for West Greene (2-6, 3-9).
Ringgold 6, Uniontown 0
Athony Koziel dominated with a one-hit shutout that included 13 strikeouts as Ringgold won at Uniontown 6-0 in Class 4A Section 2.
Demetri Lowe hit a solo home run and Andrew Sprinkle had a triple and two RBI for Ringgold (5-5, 6-8)
Carmichaels 4, Beth-Center 1
Two Carmichaels pitchers combined on a five-hitter as Carmichaels won a non-section at Beth-Center, 4-1.
Winning pitcher Colin Andrews worked into the sixth inning and Robbie Wilson-Jones got the final four outs for save for the Mikes (7-4).
