High school baseball: Waynesburg clinches section title with win over Keystone Oaks

Tyler Groves pitched 6 2/3 innings of one-hit ball and had seven strikeouts to help Waynesburg clinch the Class 3A Section 4 title with a 2-0 win over Keystone Oaks (4-5, 7-6) Monday.

Groves also went 2 for 3 at the plate with a double. Austin Surber recorded the final out to earn a save for the Raiders (9-0, 13-1).

Jake Stephenson had two hits, including a double. Kory Taylor and CJ Corwin drove in a run apiece.

Bentworth 1, Beth-Center 0:

Lucas Burt and Jacob Burt combined to throw a no-hitter in a 1-0 win for Bentworth (4-7, 4-8) over Beth-Center (1-7, 4-10) in Class 2A Section 1.

Lucas pitched the first five innings and had 11 strikeouts and four walks. Jacob struck out four over the final two innings to earn a save.

Charleroi 8, Brownsville 3

Kaden Woods singled three times, scored two runs and had an RBI for Charleroi (6-3, 8-5) in a 8-3 victory over Brownsville (3-8, 4-9) in Class 3A Section 4.

Logan Usher pitched a complete game for the Cougars with nine strikeouts and all three runs that scored for Brownsville were unearned.

Brock Henderson went 2 for 4 with a double.

Jefferson-Morgan 7, Chartiers-Houston 0

John Woodward and Brayden Ellsworth combined to pitch a complete game shutout, lifting Jefferson-Morgan (10-3) to a 7-0 victory over Chartiers-Houston (6-7) in nonsection play.

Woodward pitched the first four innings and struck out seven and Ellsworth did not allow a hit over the final three innings with one strikeout. Woodward added an RBI double and Dayten Marion had a two-run triple.

Jeannette 5, Mapletown 3

A three-run top of the sixth inning propelled Jeannette (4-4, 6-7) past Mapletown, 5-3, in Class A Section 1.

Josh Howard and Lucas Stevenson had three hits each for the Maples (0-9, 1-11) and Carson Vanata had a pair of hits and RBI.

N Carter Strayer singled, doubled and had two RBI for Mt. Pleasant (10-4) in a 4-2 win over Ringgold (7-9) in a nonsection game.

Gavin Angotti and Max Soles had an RBI apiece for the Rams.

Burgettstown 4, Frazier 3:

Sam Elich went 2 for 2 with three RBI and Burgettstown (8-1, 10-1) edged Frazier, 4-3, to stay in a tie for first place with Fort Cherry in the Class 2A Section 1 standings.

The Blue Devils led 4-0 after two innings, but Frazier (3-6, 7-7) scored twice in the fifth and once in the sixth.

Matthew Bredel pitched a complete game for the Blue Devils with seven strikeouts and only one of his three runs was earned.

Fort Cherry 4, California 3

A go-ahead two-run double by Landon Trnavsky in the top of the fifth inning helped Fort Cherry get past California 4-3 Class 2A Section 1.

The Rangers (8-1, 10-4) got an insurance run in the sixth when Ben Demascal scored on a passed ball and they needed it, because the Trojans (5-4, 5-8) scored a run on an error in the seventh. Dylan Lueck struck out Colton Lowden with two runners on to earn a save.

Ricky Lawson and Kaden Weston had two hits each for the Trojans.

Belle Vernon 10, Albert Gallatin 0:

Parker Lind racked up 16 strikeouts and allowed one hit as Belle Vernon (7-2, 11-2) blanked Albert Gallatin 10-0 in six innings in Class 4A Section 2.

A double by Geno Valenti broke up the no-hit bid.

Alonzo Wade, Seth Tomalski and Connor Bregman had two RBI for the Leopards.

Carmichaels 11, Avella 3

Carmichaels built an early six-run cushion and cruised to an 11-3 victory over Avella in Class A Section 1.

Robbie Wilson-Jones had two hits and three RBI for the Mikes (6-3, 9-4). Colin Andrews was the winning pitcher with four strikeouts over five innings and had a single and drove in two at the plate.

Logan Fedak and Cam Ullom drove in a run for the Eagles (6-5, 10-5).

South Fayette 6, Canon-McMillan 4

Connor Rynn pitched six shutout innings and South Fayette (9-6) held off a late Canon-McMillan rally in a 6-4 nonsection win.

The Big Macs (13-5) scored all four of their runs in the bottom of the seventh. Back-to-Back RBI doubles by MJ Maruschak and Sebastian Shulsky brought the tying run to the plate with one out, but Ryan Speer induced two groundouts to secure the win.

Speer and Ethan Rose had two hits for South Fayette.

Peters Township 7, Trinity 5

Peters Township overcame a two-run deficit by scoring five times in the fifth inning and went on to a 7-5 victory over Trinity in Class 5A Section 2.

PT (5-4, 10-6) took the lead in the fifth on an error and the Indians’ David Oberschelp followed with an RBI double.

Winning pitcher Jack Stewart allowed three runs over six innings.

Matthew Robaugh had a double and scored twice for Trinity (4-5, 7-7).

Washington 6, McGuffey 3

Jayden Hagan hit a tiebreaking two-run double in the fifth inning and Washington went on to a 6-3 win over McGuffey in Class 3A Section 4.

Zander Henderson also drove in a pair of Wash High (1-8, 4-11). Winning pitcher Caleb Patton worked into the sixth inning and Will Callah got the final four outs.
