High school softball: C-H assured of at least share of section title

Simms becomes winningest coach at West Greene

West Greene softball coach Bill Simms earned his 285th career win Monday, making him the winngest coach in a single sport in Pioneers athletics history.

Chartiers-Houston clinched at least a share of the Class 2A Section 3 championship with an 18-0 thumping of Carlynton on Monday.

The Bucs are 9-0 in the section and 15-1 overall. C-H has not lost to a Class 2A team this season.

Meadow Ferri pitched only one inning for the Bucs and struck out all three batters she faced to surpass 700 strikeouts for her career. Tayrne Drilak pitched the final two innings, striking out six.

C-H had 19 hits, including eight that went for extra bases. Lauren Rush led the way, going 4-for-4 with a home run, triple, four RBI and four runs. Drilak doubled and drove in four, Seanna Riggle had a triple, and Ferri, Ella Richey, Sydney English and Zaylee Fonner each doubled.

West Greene 7, Jefferson-Morgan 4

Katie Brudnock had a two-run double in the third inning that saw West Greene take the lead and the Pioneers went on to a 7-4 win over Jefferson-Morgan in a key Class A Section 2 game.

The win makes West Greene 7-1 in section and 12-1 overall. It also makes Pioneers head coach Bill Simms the winningest coach in any single sport in West Greene athletics history. It was his 285th career win, surpassing longtime Pioneers wrestling coach John “Buzz” Walters’ 284 victories.

J-M falls to 4-4, 7-5.

Winning pitcher Payton Gilbert struck out 10 and walked two. Marissa Tharp drove in a pair of runs.

J-M outhit West Greene 11-6 but committed four errors. Emmilee Bazzoli had a double for the Rockets.

Frazier 7, Waynesburg 3

Frazier took sole possession of first place in Class 2A Section 4 with a 7-3 win at Waynesburg.

Frazier moves to 7-1 in section, 10-2 overall and avenged an earlier loss to Waynesburg (6-2, 9-5).

The Commodores scored the game’s first four runs. Waynesburg closed to within 4-3 in the fourth inning but Frazier scored three insurance runs in the seventh.

Winning pitcher Addison Hines struck out 11 and allowed three unearned runs on nine hits.

Avery Davis went 3-for-3 for Waynesburg and Ellie Makel drove in a pair of runs. Gina Tedrow struck out 11. The Raiders committed three errors that led to four unearned runs.

Brownsville 5, California 2

Winning pitcher Ava Clark struck out 18 and did not issue a walk, sparking Brownsville to a 5-2 win over California in a nonsection game.

Kayla Saeli had two hits, including a double, for California.

Trinity 13, Bethel Park 3

Trinity scored 10 runs in the third inning and went on to a 13-3 win over Bethel Park in Class 5A Section 4. The win keeps Trinity in contention for the section title. The Hillers began the day one game behind first-place Baldwin.

Ally Krenzelak went 3-for-3, scored three runs and drove in two to lead the Hillers (8-3, 10-7). Gabby Humphreys had three hits including a double. Riley Venick also doubled. Maddie Ray was the winning pitcher.

McGuffey 17, Steel Valley 4

McGuffey scored nine runs in the top of the first and went on to a 17-4 win over Steel Valley in a five-inning game in Class 3A Section 3.

Mackenzie Shrader doubled and drove in four runs, Kali Franks also doubled and winning pitcher Makenna Crothers struck out nine as McGuffey moved to 7-3 in section and 10-5 overall.

Carmichaels 9, Beth-Center 1

Bailey Barnyak struck out 17 and did not walk a batter, leading Class A Section 2 leader Carmichaels to a 9-1 win at Beth-Center.

Carys McConnell doubled and drove in a pair, and Ali Jacobs also doubled for the Mikes (7-0, 11-0).

Beth-Center (2-6, 2-10) had three hits but two of them were doubles, by Alli Lynch and Sarah Bader.

Avella 12, Mapletown 2

Avella moved into the final playoff position from Class A Section 2 with a 12-2 win at Mapletown, avenging an earlier loss to the Maples.

Winning pitcher Avery Rado threw a five-hitter and helped her cause with a solo homer, three RBI and a steal of home. Emma Johnson drove in four runs, Taylor Shirley tripled and Emily Buel doubled for Avella (3-5, 4-9).

Elizabeth Forward 12, Belle Vernon 2

Berlin Holibaugh hit two doubles and drove in three runs, powering Class 4A Section 2 leader Elizabeth Forward to a 12-2 win over Belle Vernon.

EF (9-1, 11-2) scored six runs in the first inning.

OLSH 11, Burgettstown 1

OLSH scored in every frame and defeated visiting Burgettstown 11-1 in six innings in Class 2A Section 3.

Julia Pinter had a double, triple and three RBI for OLSH (6-1, 8-4) and winning pitcher Camryn Hummel struck out seven.

Brooklyn Robinson and Layla Sherman doubled for Burgettstown (4-5, 7-8).

Seton LaSalle 19-15, Fort Cherr 0-0

N Seton LaSalle swept Fort Cherry in Class 2A Section 3 doubleheader, winning the first game 19-0 and the second 15-0.

N Emma Earley allowed two runs over six innings, Cam Valentino drove in two runs and scored twice and South Fayette (6-3, 11-5) defeated Upper St. Clair (2-7, 7-7) 9-2 in Class 5A Section 3.
