High school baseball: Waynesburg wins outright section title
Waynesburg scored 10 runs in the third inning Tuesday and went on to a 13-3 victory over Keystone Oaks that clinched the outright Class 3A Section 4 title for the Raiders.
Waynesburg is 10-0 in the section and 14-1 overall.
The Raiders led 2-1 before the big bottom of the third inning.
Alex VanSickle led Waynesburg at the plate, going 3-for-3 with a double and triple. Derek Turcheck also hit a triple, and C.J. Corwin and Jarrett Tretinik added doubles.
Winning pitcher Austin Surber struck out six and allowed only one earned run.
KO (4-6, 7-7), is battling McGuffey and Brownsville for the final playoff spot out of the section.
Peters Township 6, Trinity 1
Peters Township completed a two-game series sweep of Trinity, beating the Hillers 6-1 in a Class 5A Section 2 game.
Three PT pitchers – starter Zach Miner and relievers Brady Pirosko and David Oberschelp – combined on a two-hitter as the Indians improved to 6-4 in section and 11-6 overall.
Nathan Skroupa and Reese Clarke, the Nos. 8 and 9 hitter in the Indians’ lineup, did plenty of damage. Skroupa tripled and drove in two runs, and Clarke had a double to go with two RBI.
Matt Robaugh had both hits for Trinity (4-6, 7-8) and scored the Hillers’ lone run.
Belle Vernon 11, Albert Gallatin 0
Lucas Judy fired a four-hit shutout and drove in three runs, powering Belle Vernon to an 11-0 win in six innings at Albert Gallatin in Class 4A Section 2.
Judy walked one and struck out five. At the plate, he went 2-for-4.
Connor Bergman had three hits, including a double and triple, as the Leopards improved to 8-2 in section and 12-2 overall.
Jeannette 10, Mapletown 0
Evan Yargeau pitched a six-hit shutout and Jeannette completed a two-game sweep of Mapletown in Class A Section 1 with a 10-0 victory in five innings.
Jeannette (5-4, 7-7) did all its scoring in the first two innings to keep its playoff hopes alive. Yargeau struck out seven and did not issue a walk in throwing his second shutout in section play.
Spencer Yeager had two hits, including a double, for Mapletown (0-10, 1-12).
