When Fort Cherry and California had their key Class 2A Section 1 game suspended because of rain Tuesday, the score was tied 5-5 in the fourth inning.

After play resumed Wednesday, it was all Fort Cherry.

The Rangers scored five more runs and defeated California 10-5 to move a half-game ahead of Burgettstown in the battle for first place. The Blue Devils are leading Frazier 13-1 in a game that was suspended Tuesday. Fort Cherry and Burgettstown will play a two-game series for the section title starting Monday at Burgettstown.

Against California, Shane Cornali and Tyler Wolfe hit home runs, Colton Temple smacked two doubles and Ryan Huey, Ben Demascla and Wolfe each had one double for the Rangers (9-1, 11-4), who have won eight in a row.

Dylan Lueck tossed three shutout innings of relief to get the win.

Logan Hartley and Ricky Lawson doubled for California (5-5, 5-9).

Charleroi 9, Brownsville 1

Charleroi scored seven early runs and cruised to a 9-1 victory over Brownsville in Class 3A Section 4.

Jacob Gelder started on the mound and tossed four shutout innings. Kaden Woods followed with three innings of relief and gave up one unearned run as Charleroi improved to 7-3 in section and 9-5 overall.

Brock Henderson led the Cougars at the plate by going 3-for-4 with two runs and a pair of RBI.

McGuffey 17, Washington 2

McGuffey scored 10 runs in the top of the sixth inning and beat Washington 17-2 to split a two-game series in Class 3A Section 4.

Cam Dames had a big game for McGuffey (6-5, 9-7), going 2-for-3 with a double, triple, two runs and three RBI.

Logan Carlisle also tripled for the Highlanders, and Brogan Meighen, Austin Johnson and Sam Stout each hit doubles. Carlisle scored four times to back the winning pitching of Wyatt Hildreth, who tossed a one-hitter as the Highlanders remain in the playoff race.
