ELLSWORTH – Bentworth certainly looked the part of a two-time defending WPIAL Class A boys soccer champion in its Class A Section 2 opener.

And the Moessner brothers were at the forefront.

Ryan Moessner scored six times and Adam Moessner had three goals in a 13-0 thumping of Greensburg Central Catholic Thursday night at Bentworth Athletic Stadium.

Ryan now sits at 98 goals for his career.

The Bearcats (1-0, 3-0) dominated the ball from the opening whistle. Greensburg Central Catholic (0-1, 0-2) did not get past midfield until more than eight minutes elapsed in the match. The Centurions did not register a shot.

Adam Moessner, a sophomore, took advantage of a mistake on a goal kick by the Greensburg Central Catholic backline and deposited a shot into the net 57 seconds into the match.

“You always want to get it started quick and get out in front, so they can’t get an early one on you,” Adam said.

Adam scored again in the third minute on a volley and the Bearcats were off and running.

“It’s always good to get off the mark fast,” Bentworth coach Nick Malarbi said. “It helps with our nerves. We know we have a ton of scoring talent on this team. We had a ton of shots on goal tonight. It’s good to put one in the back of the net early, get into our rhythm and keep the ball rolling.”

After Adam scored the first two, then it was big brother’s time to shine.

Ryan Moessner, a senior, scored five straight goals to end the first half.

The first one came in the seventh minute when he scored off a rebound of a shot by Adam.

Maybe his finest goal of the night came at the 11:52 mark. It was a slick turnaround shot in front of goal that made it 4-0.

“I just feel for the defender and where he’s at, so I can turn to my strong foot and get enough space to get it past him,” Ryan said.

His third goal was impressive as well. He rose high above everyone on a corner kick by Caden Hackinson and powered a header into the net with 9:01 remaining until halftime.

“I looked at Caden Hackinson, who was taking the corner, when I saw I was unmarked,” Ryan said. “I gave him a little nod. He looked over at me and then played a perfect ball right to my head. The pass couldn’t have been better.”

The fourth goal came less than a minute later and he got his fifth with just over five and half minutes remaining in the first half.

Bentworth scored four more times in the first six minutes of the second half.

Billy Moyer, Dillan Colbert and the Moessner brothers scored one each.

The Moessner brothers played the first six minutes of the second half before getting the rest of the night off. Most of the starters were out of the game well before the midpoint of the second half.

Hackinson added a goal with 19 and a half minutes remaining and Corbin McMurray closed the scoring in the final seconds by chipping the ball past the keeper and into the net.

Bentworth has a nonsection game Tuesday at Elizabeth Forward before returning to section play Thursday at Chartiers-Houston.
