CLAYSVILLE – Trinity scored touchdowns on two of its first three offensive plays and the Hillers never looked back, rolling to a 35-13 victory over McGuffey in a nonconference game Friday night.
Trinity (1-1) led 7-0 only 20 seconds into the game, 14-0 less than four minutes into the first quarter and 21-0 with more than three minutes to play in the opening quarter.
The Hillers’ Daniel Glass returned the opening kickoff 67 yards to the McGuffey 26-yard line. On the first snap from center, running back Owen Gardner took a swing pass to the left from quarterback Jonah Williamson and scampered into the end zone for the game’s first score.
A high snap from center on a McGuffey punt led to a short kick and the Hillers took over at the Highlanders’ 47-yard line. A pass to Glass covered 44 yards, and on the next play Williamson hit Braden Berdar for a three-yard TD and 14-0 lead.
Another high snap on a McGuffey punt set up Trinity with good field position again. This time, the Hillers scored on a 22-yard pass from Williamson to Owen Samagola that made it 21-0.
McGuffey mounted a good drive on its next possession, but Trinity’s Ben Priest intercepted a pass and returned it 67 yards down the sideline for a touchdown two plays into the second quarter.
Trinity’s lead went to 35-0 when Williamson hit Ayvari Chandler down the right sideline for a 59-yard TD with 8:02 left in the first half.
Williamson completed nine of 10 passes – all in the first half – for 200 yards and four touchdowns.
McGuffey found the end zone for the first time with 25 seconds left in the third quarter when sophomore running back Denny Furmanek scored on a 12-yard counter play.
Furmanek scored his second touchdown, on a 14-yard run, midway through the fourth quarter.
