High school basketball: Canon-McMillan battles back, wins at South Fayette

Roman Koenemund poured in a game-high 19 points, sparking Canon-McMillan to a 49-43 road win over South Fayette in a nonsection game Wednesday night.

The Bigs (2-1) won with a second-half comeback after falling behind 24-16 at halftime. The Big Macs outscored the Lions 18-10 in the third quarter to tie the score, then won with a 15-9 edge in the final period.

Owen Keener and Tyson Wright each scored 10 points for South Fayette.

Beth-Center 74, Frazier 65

Jason Zellie and Parker Amos combined for 43 points as Beth-Center defeated Frazier 74-65 in the Bulldogs’ season opener.

Beth-Center won by overcoming a 44-point performance by Frazier’s Kolby Stewart. Stewart made nine three-point field goals.

Frazier led 15-11 at the end of one quarter but B-C pulled ahead 32-22 at halftime and 58-44 after three quarters.

Brayden Hull contributed 15 points for Beth-Center.

Waynesburg 61, West Greene 38

Jackson Dean scored 20 points, Cole Headlee added 18 and Waynesburg opened its season with a 61-38 win at West Greene.

Dane Woods gave Waynesburg three players in double figures as he tossed in 15 points.

Matt Wassill had 12 points and Darren Knight 11 to lead West Greene.

McGuffey 47, Propel Braddock Hills 34

Ayden Janovich scored 13 points, leading McGuffey to a 47-34 victory over Propel Braddock Hills in nonsection play.

Turkeyfoot 74, Mapletown 13

Lance Jones led four Turkeyfoot players in double figures with 24 points and the Rams trotted all over host Mapletown, 74-13.

Turkeyfoot led 33-2 after one quarter and Mapletown (0-2) failed to score more than four points in any quarter.

Girls results

Waynesburg 67, West Greene 51

Freshmen Emma Blair and Tess Pauley combined for 39 points as Waynesburg picked up a 67-51 road win over West Greene in a nonsection girls basketball game Wednesday night.

Waynesburg 2-0) made seven three-point field goals as part of a 44-point first half and held off West Greene’s second-half rally.

Blair led Waynesburg with 20 points and Pauley followed with 19. Pyeton Cowell gave the raiders three players in double figures as she netted 15.

Kendra Tharp’s 19 points led West Greene (2-1), which cut Waynesburg’s lead to single digits early in the fourth quarter. Madelyn Roberts added 12 points.

Carmichaels 56, Avella 30

Joselyn Carter scored 20 points, sparking Carmichaels to its first win of the season, 56-30, over Carmichaels in a nonsection game.

The Mikes (1-2) led 24-18 at halftime and then held Avella (1-2) to 12 points in the second half.

Ke’Lanie Chun also had a big game for the Mikes, tossing in 18 points.

Kenzi Miller and Alessa Buzzard each scored nine points to pace Avella.

Burgettstown 43, Bishop Canevin 27

Freshman guard Emilyn Harrison scored a game-high 17 points as Burgettstown overcame host Bishop Canevin and a malfunctioning scoreboard to beat the Crusaders 43-27 in a nonsection game.

The game was played with an operating scoreboard, which made keeping the time left on the clock difficult but it didn’t slow the Blue Devils. Burgettstown (2-1) forged a 9-0 lead in the first quarter and led 25-9 at halftime.

Paige Klodowski followed Harrison in the scoring column with 12 points and Savanna Rush had 10.

Isabella Sysak led Canevin (0-1) in scoring with 14 points.

Chartiers-Houston 56, Brentwood 20

Chartiers-Houston forged a 15-point lead in the first quarter and cruised to a 56-20 victory over host Brentwood in a nonsection game.

Ali Wingard led the Bucs (2-0) by scoring 13 points and Ava Kolovich followed with 10. C-H led 19-4 at the end of the first quarter and 23-8 at halftime.

Seton LaSalle 57, Fort Cherry 37

Natalie Pascorella scored 16 points, Ava Maroney added 13 and Seton LaSalle used strong middle quarters to beat Fort Cherry, 57-37.

Seton LaSalle led 16-11 after one quarter and then outscored the Rangers 28-13 over the next two frames.

Emily Pfender led Fort Cherry with nine points.
