O-R Athlete of the Week: Sutton Williamson, Trinity
Name: Sutton Williamson
Grade: Junior
School: Trinity
Sport: Basketball
Williamson’s week: To say Williamson had been eager for basketball season to get here would be accurate.
“I had been waiting for the first game since the first day of school,” Williamson said.
She played like that was indeed the case and helped the Hillers win two games at the North Allegheny tip-off tournament.
Williamson had 17 points in a 43-27 win over North Allegheny on Friday and followed that with 13 points Saturday in a 55-47 victory against Mt. Lebanon.
She led the Hillers in scoring in both games and nearly had a double-double against the Tigers, with nine rebounds and contributed four steals and three blocked shots on defense.
On Saturday against the Blue Devils, she had eight rebounds and a pair of steals and blocks.
“Beating two (Class) 6A teams to start the season provides us with a good foundation,” Williamson said.
Basketball family: Williamson has been a hooper forever. She played some other sports growing up, but it became clear to her basketball was the one she wanted to pursue. It’s the only sport she plays at Trinity.
She’s had plenty of positive influences in basketball.
Her cousin, Eden Williamson, was a standout basketball player for the Hillers and has gone on to be a part of a NYU women’s basketball team that has won two consecutive NCAA Division III titles.
Both of her parents were basketball players too and her mom, Shaun, was her coach growing up.
“I think the biggest thing my parents have helped me with is my poise and concentration,” Williamson said. “They’ve helped me learn how to stay calm on the court. I feel like my anticipation is a big part too and they helped with that.”
Bouncing back: Last year was a rare down year for Trinity in what has been a pretty good run of success. The Hillers missed the postseason after being a staple in the WPIAL playoffs for years and even made a state championship appearance in 2017.
Trinity had a young team last year and returns all five starters: Williamson, Gabby Rieg, Kimari Behrens, Bently Layhue and Vitt Emerich.
“We’re definitely motivated after last year,” Williamson said. “We’ve been working hard and I think our communication and team chemistry have improved and that will help us.”
Making food and music: In her free time away from school and basketball, Williamson enjoys several hobbies, including baking, playing the guitar and piano, and reading.
Baking is something she’s enjoyed for a long time.
She said Eden was not only a big influence for her in basketball, but baking too.
What does she feel is the best thing she bakes?
“My chocolate chip cookies,” Williamson said.
The piano and guitar are polar opposites when it comes to instruments, but Williamson plays both. She started playing guitar a couple years ago after receiving one as a gift.
“My grandma got me a guitar and I’ve been playing it ever since, and I started with a keyboard and went to a piano,” Williamson said. “I really like music and I enjoy playing both.”
