High school basketball: Wash High boys outlast Waynesburg

Tristan Reed led three Washington players in double figures with 17 points and the Prexies outlasted host Waynesburg 56-53 in overtime Friday night.

Wash High (2-2) trailed 27-25 at halftime and 43-41 after three quarters but outscored Waynesburg 6-4 in the fourth to force the extra session. Wash High held a 9-6 scoring edge in overtime.

Vincent Johnson chipped in with 15 points for the Prexies and Teyvonne France had 13.

Cole Headlee scored a game-high 19 points to go with seven rebounds and four assists for Waynesburg (1-1). Jackson Dean followed with 16. Dane Woods grabbed 10 rebounds.

Peters Township 68, Avonworth 41

Dylan Donovan scored 18 points as Peters Township defeated shorthanded Avonworth 68-41 at AHN Arena.

PT (2-0) led 38-26 at halftime before breaking the game open by outscoring the Antelopes 28-5 in the third quarter to move out to a 66-31 advantage.

Jaden Greco finished with 12 points for PT and Lucas Sax tossed in 10.

Avonworth (0-2), which was missing several players because the Antelopes play Saturday in the PIAA Class 4A football championship game, was led in scoring by Will Shields’ 14 points.

South Side Beaver 92, Burgettstown 57

Andrew Corfield poured in 46 points, powering South Side Beaver to a 92-57 victory over visiting Burgettstown.

South Side (3-1) led by only four points after one quarter and had a 39-30 advantage at halftime. The Rams exploded for 31 points in the third quarter and 53 in the second half.

Logan Leatherman added 15 points for South Side.

Burgettstown placed three players in double figures, including Dom Stevenson and Balek Neal with 14 points each. Caleb Matalik scored 10 points.

McGuffey 49, West Greene 42

Wyatt Frazee scored 18 points as McGuffey held off visiting West Greene 49-42 in a nonsection game.

The Highlanders (2-2), who have won two in a row, trailed 23-22 at halftime but outscored West Greene (0-2) by a 14-2 margin in the pivotal third quarter.

West Greene was led in scoring by Whill Shipmen with 14 points.

Bentworth 45, Carmichaels 15

Ryan Moessner and Ben Hays combined for 38 points as Bentworth defeated visiting Carmichaels 45-15 in nonsection action.

Bentworth (1-0) led 8-2 after one quarter and then outscored Carmichaels (0-2) by a 35-9 margin over the next two periods.

Moessner led Bentworth in scoring with 22 points and Hays followed with 16.

Stevie Lewis had six points for Carmichaels (0-2).

Upper St. Clair 59, Belle Vernon 47

Upper St. Clair used a balanced offensive effort to outscore Belle Vernon in the second half and beat the Leopards 59-47 in the first round of the Panthers’ tip-off tournament.

The score was tied 15-15 after one quarter and 23-23 at halftime. USC then outscored the visitors 13-12 in the third quarter and pulled away over the final eight minutes with a 23-12 scoring edge.

Luke Machinsky led four USC players in double figures with 12 points. Jake Foster, Jude Ausi and Andrew Gaither each tallied 10 points.

Belle Vernon’s Curtis Wade scored a game-high 16 points and Luca Ghilani tossed in 12.

Avella 75, Mapletown 15

Bryce Wright poured in 24 points and Avcella bounced back from its first loss of the season on Thursday to rout host Mapletown 75-15 in a nonsection game.

Avella (3-1) forged a commanding 29-5 lead after one quarter and led 47-11 at halftime. The Eagles then outscored Mapletown (0-3) 18-0 in the third quarter.

Brayden Fuller had 14 points, Cameron Ulom tossed in 12 and Baryden Davis had nine points and 13 rebounds for the winners.

Colton Taylor hit double figures for Mapletown with 11 points.

Winchester Thurston 44, Monessen 32

A rough second quarter doomed Monessen in a 44-32 loss to Winchester Thurston at the Fort Cherry tournament.

The Greyhounds (0-1) were outscored 11-2 in the frame and trailed 21-10 at halftime.

Michael Hammerling scored 22 points for the Bears (2-1).

Franklin Regional 61, South Fayette 48

Alec Marsten led three Franklin Regional players in double figures with 18 points in a 61-48 win over South Fayette.

Logan Walter added 17 points for the Panthers (2-0) and Anthony Mitchell scored 10.

Tyson Wright led South Fayette (0-2) with 16 points and Owen Keener scored 12.

Girls results

West Greene 42, McGuffey 39

West Greene rode a big first quarter to a 42-39 victory over host McGuffey in a nonsection game.

The Pioneers (3-1) jumped out to a 19-11 lead after one period and held off McGuffey (2-2) the rest of the way, though the Highlanders closed to within 35-33 at the end of the third quarter. West Greene outscored the host team 7-6 in the fourth quarter.

McGuffey took the lead – the Highlanders led by as many as four points – in the fourth quarter, but Jillisa Yeater made a three-pointer with less than one minute remaining to put West Greene back on top for good. Yeater finished with a game-high 17 points.

Kendra Tharp, who scored nine points, made a free throw to give West Greene the two-point edge and McGuffey was unable to get off a shot before time expired.

Maura Janovich led McGuffey with nine points.

Chartiers-Houston 46, Uniontown 41

Ali Wingard had 17 points to pace Chartiers-Houston in a comeback win, 46-41, over Uniontown at the Brownsville Tournament.

The Bucs improved to 3-0 in the win and will play against host Brownsville in the championship game, 5 p.m. Saturday.

Chartiers-Houston trailed 20-15 at halftime after scoring only two points in the second quarter, but won the second half 31-21.

Ava Kolovich added 14 points for the Bucs. Lyric McLee led Uniontown (0-1) with 17 points and Aierra Jenkins scored 11.

Brownsville 48, Bentworth 18

Skyler Gates poured in a game-high 27 points to propel tournament host Brownsville (1-0) past Bentworth (0-1).

Ava Clark added 11 points for the Falcons, who play Chartiers-Houston in Saturday’s championship game.

Zoie McDonald led Bentworth with eight points. The Bearcats play Uniontown in the consolation game.

Charleroi 41, Derry 15

Eden Smith had 15 points to pace Charleroi (2-1) in a 41-15 win over Derry (1-2) in the Major Corley Tip-Off Tournament at Monessen.

Ava Henderson added 13 points for the Cougars and Anna Kondratowicz scored seven.

Jeannette 32, Monessen 26 (2 OT)

Leah DeFelice scored 12 points to help Jeannette outlast Monessen, 32-26, in double overtime at the Major Corley Tip-Off Tournament

The Jayhawks (3-1) outscored the Greyhounds 8-2 in the second overtime and came all the way back after trailing 7-0 at the end of the first quarter.

They turned the table on the Greyhounds (0-1) in the third quarter blanking them 8-0.

Madison Johnson had a game-high 16 points for Monessen.

Aquinas Academy 45, California 29

Katie Tarquinio scored 14 points and Tess Duer added 10 points for tournament host Aquinas Academy (2-0) in a 45-29 win over California (0-2).

Hayley Gibson scored nine points for the Trojans, who led 9-8 after the first quarter, but were outscored 20-6 in the second.

Fort Cherry 47, Ellis School 19

Fort Cherry defended its home court well by racing out to a 36-8 lead at halftime and went on to beat Ellis School 47-19.

Gianna Bianchini led the Rangers with 20 points and sank six three-pointers. Brooke Cornali contributed 10 points for Fort Cherry (1-1).

Angelina Jones had 14 points for Ellis School (1-1).
